I've rung the bank. They don't charge BUT the Spanish banks do, ?1.25 for every transaction & 2% of the sterling.

I don't think anybody knows that, otherwise they would be very wealthy. Somebody the other day (a big cheese in finance) said that Sterling was dead, and folk should get out of it, it has promptly risen 5% since then. It went down to about $1.35 last week, it's now up at $1.43. Our investors have told us that longer term $1.60 is deemed as a "fair price" - it may, or indeed may not ever get to that. If you're happy with what you can get now, then just take it, if not, maybe spread your purchases of the currency over a 4~6 week period. It's moving so much on a daily basis, it;s very difficult to judge. I've just bought ?100K worth at $1.41, I may end up kicking myself, but if it goes back down to $1.35 in the next few weeks, I'll be quite pleased with myself. Swings and Roundabouts

I have a mortage in US$ and since about October last year, I've been considering converting a lump sum of sterling into dollars, unfortunately, I never did as I assumed there would be a stabilisation at some point, wish I had now as it's falling like f?ck and not yet stopped, I'd change your money now just to be on the safe side dispite the sh?teness of the rate

Apart from the fact thats its a reflection of the state of our economy, anything that we import( which is virtually everything) is getting more expensive.
