i opened mine with "i hope you'll forgive me for being so nervous, only ever given one speech before and that was at the Bury Gay Society Ball the other week, so its a relief to see so many familar faces"

 

it got a decent laugh, then it was was easy after that, christ knows what id have done if that bombed!?

 

i found if i went against all the advice the books give, then the funnier and more original the speech will be - like i took the piss out of the bride and her mother too, only a little bit, and subtley but it went down well. the books say this is a big no no though. also leave off the sentimental stuff about the groom, nobody wants to hear it. just keep on with the abuse and have one nice thing to say at the end.

 

also, have a swear - everyone likes a good swear, bollocks to what all the best man books say. i dont mean act like Chubbs or owt, but relax and talk like you would in the pub to your mates. you might offend one or two grannies, but they only make up 0.1% of the audience. and kids are not listening anyway.
