Micky, can you give any reason why (other than trying to get back for Deal or No Deal) a fire engine would be driving fast and blaring its horns and lights on its way BACK to the station?

 

This happened on Friday afternoon in Leigh....followed it all the way along Atherleigh Way back onto St Helens Road.

At Leigh they have two fire engines and two special appliances. One of the Specials is a fucking big cherry-picker. You'll have seen them with Simon Snorkel along the sides. They also have an ERU (Enhanced Rescue Unit). Both the specials are crewed by the same two lads. Quite often though, one of the lads may be qualified to work one of the machines but not the other. In this case, the nearest fire engine to the station would go back and juggle the crews around so the right people go out with the right appliance.

 

It also happens at Bolton. Often I am the only person qualified to drive two of our three special appliances. They are hook-lift demountable pod systems. If I only ever got to drive these special appliances I'd pretty soon be at the slashing wrist stage. In order that I maintain competance on all other stuff, I can go out on proper fire engines but, as with Leigh, if they need me to go out on the hook-lift stuff, I'd have to get back to the station quickly.

The lads/lasses dont need chippys, the canteens are ace from my experience & a crackin gym at leigh station.

As a side note. Twice this week I have seen ambulances with everything blaring.

 

The first time I got stuck behind it as it stuck rigidly to 30mph and the second time I saw one in my mirror but it never caught up intime for me to move over.

 

Do they not have any sense of urgency?

stopped at the lights the other day at chorley hospital roundabout, and to my right a copper slowed down for his red light.

 

just as my light turn green, his blues came on for a split second and off he went in front of me.

 

obviously i stopped, let him go.

 

i followed him for 4 miles down the a6 at 40mph.

 

he obviously couldnt be arsed waiting for the light the change.

 

i did think of pulling him over and getting his warrant number, but thought better of it
