Anybody on here an expert with regards to external hard drives/data recovery?

 

I bought an Ionmega Screen Play 500GB External Hard Drive a few years back. It is now out of warranty.

 

I tried to create back up storage for my laptop on it but there was not enough space. I then went into my Hard drive and deleted the back up computer files (but left my music, photos, films on it).

 

Since then, when I plug my hard drive into my laptop, the computer doesn't recognise it and the hard drive just clicks.

 

Rang Iomega and I was told it would cost at least 500 euro to recover the information.

 

Does anybody on here know how I can recover it or recommend someone that can? I'm not arsed about my music as I have everything on CD, but I have photos that are really important to me.

 

I'm planning to buy a new hard drive so I wouldn't be bothered about fixing that, I just want my files from it.

Its fucked.

 

To recover it they take it to bits and put it back together with identical parts.

 

Its done in a sterile room as the tiniest bit of dust will render it unrecoverable, thats why there is a huge cost.

 

However, describe these pictures, there may be a whipround.

 

Are these pictures on the internet anywhere as you may be able to pull them from there.

These things break more often that they should so make sure you have copies of stuff elsewhere.

 

Baz is right that the ?500 job will be a lab environment rebuild however there might be other options. It might be the PC so try it on another system.

 

It might come to opening up the drive, taking the drive out and connecting it directly to your pc and seeing what happens. Nothing bad will happen anyway.

 

It might just be necessary to "persuade" it to work with a well times whack. That worked on mine anyway. Now I avoid Western Digital.

Ah, percussive maintenance. I thought this art had died when tellys stopped having valves inside.

Take the hard drive and put it in a ziploc bag and pop it in the freezer overnight.

 

I read about this years ago. It can't do much more damage, surely?

For what it's worth, I bought a 1.5TB hard drive 2 weeks ago from Comet and transferred all my films and music into it. well I turned my computer on this morning and there was a pop and my circuit breaker tripped.

 

It was my external hard drive.

 

Got it replaced but lost all my media
