It's not health care you are playing for, it's social care. If you are in Bolton you will have been in the "re-ablement" service, this is a free service that runs for 6 weeks, in order to try to get people to move towards independance. Once this is over, an assesment will take place, and a pakcage put in place - if you mother has savings, she will be expected to make a contribution towards this. The onfusion with Health will come as re-ablement is a multi-agency service.

There isn't much you can do about it, the savings levels are something that comes via legal channels (only left Adult and Community Services 6 weeks ago and forgot the legal acts already).

So, we should start emptying elderly relatives' bank accounts?

You mean you haven't already, get your finger out

My parents are living on pot noodles and 2 for a ?1 frozen meals from the market

It won't do em any harm

I hope you're joking.

Real Pot Noodles are expensive, try supermarket own brand next time.

Fot this exact reason, and because of what happened with my gran, my dad left me, my brother and my mum a third each of my mum and dad's house.

Provided my mum outlives my dad by seven years we will save a lot of inheritance tax.

This was advised by his solicitor.

I hope you're joking.

I hope you're joking an' all, do you know how much it costs to boil a kettle? Neither do I, but I'd guess quite a bit.

Parking at the market is a nightmare too - plus you've got to deliver and thus will be forced to interact with them ("no, I can't fix the flush on the toilet - fill a bucket up in the bath".) Soup (19p a can at Aldi) is easy to parcel up and delivery by parcels2go works out pretty cheap in the long run. Soup also has another advantage in that it can be warmed in the can, next to ONE of those halogen heaters...

Google Bolton Carers Support. They are an excellent charitable organisation who should be able to advise you properly on what your rights/responsibilities are. They can also help with respite, any benefits you might be able to claim for and generally just being all round good eggs!
