He was also wrong and shouldn't have been giving you false information. The flag of the nation is known as the union jack, as laid down in parliament in 1902. Relatively new misconception as diver states, possibly because it is derived from the term jack used on ships, but it's one of them misconceptions that people use to appear smarter than the average bear when infact they are wrong or have been given false information. as for the hanging upside down bit, the one in the local is upside down, and thats run by an ex services guy, so local shops etc have no chance if he can't get it right.
