Phil Gartside Was Worried About The Financial Implications If We Had Won The League Cup

Quote from Big Sam in his newspaper column, in yesterday's London Evening Standard

'When we reached a final at Bolton my chairman, Phil Gartside, pointed out to me that there were financial implications if we qualified for Europe, in terms of the cost of new players and bonus payments.

As a manager, my focus was winning the final, then growing the squad to do well in Europe — and I wanted him to give allocate funds so I could do that.

It was a horrible thing to hear  but I could half‑understand why  he said it.'

If, just if, Gartside had bombed FSA out when FSA was touting himself for the England job. Maybe, just maybe, a different manager could've taken us to the elusive next level that FSA has consistently failed to achieve.

The class bit got to you did it. The post didn't mention Allardyce having class. It questioned those who vilify him for leaving the club and the constant barracking every time he's quoted. Just let it lie. I thought I'd furnish you with a couple of examples of why it lacks class. Now if you want to pick up your ball and take it home with you that's entirely up to you.

PG would have been very happy if BSA had landed the England job. With their friendship already broken, it would have been an honourable parting for all concerned.

The fact that he lost his only crack at a trophy to his rival for the job didn't help. Can't blame the board for that one, but Mike Riley fits the bill nicely. A dubious 2-0 in 7 minutes became 2-1 in 21, but never looking like staging a recovery.

When we hit the inside of the post, an inch off going in, that looked like a recovery to me.

So they weren't mates for 3 years before he left? We had a good few chances in the first half, djorkaeff came v close but goal aside, schwarzer was in good form

What is fucking farcical about these stories and why only totally and complete fucksticks would listen to them is the game is played by players.

Does anyone believe the players in anyway would not everything in a cup final ? Remember the 'problem' if we won was the bonuses we would have to play these players.

The fact the Chairman understood the implication of winning the game is hardly a reason to blame him for the result.

So they weren't mates for 3 years before he left?

read it again

thats not what malc said

I've read it again

I read it that if fat sam had got the England job it Would've been a good time for him to leave as him and pg had fallen out

He was only in the frame for it once, well before he left, suggesting they weren't getting on for some time

If that's not what he meant, then I don't know what he meant

it wasn't 3 years before he left that he was screaming from the rooftops about his powerpoint presentation

Checked and it was 16 months, So when did they fall out? 18 months to 2 years before he left?

I wish he had been appointed to the England job

I wish he had been appointed to the England job

I didn't apply - but thanks anyway.

Or if you mean BSA the point is Bolton fans would have accepted losing him, which would otherwise be difficult whenever it arose.

Can't be arsed starting a new thread but anyone want Karl Oyston as chairman instead. What a vulgar prick washing his laundry in public.

And I am someone with no love for Paul Ince.
