5 nights in July, any guidance re trips, restaurants etc is sought?

Worthy, missus' family is from close by. Get around to Positano (spectacular), Amalfi, Maiori and Minori. That coastline (Costiera Amalfitana) is one of the most beautiful in the world. Loads of great restaurants all along that coastline, especially if you like seafood.

 

Personally, would avoid the tourist rip off trap of Capri but it is a nice place to see.

Capri is a tourist trap but a must see IMO, and you don't have to spend any money there

Just get the ferry to Capri - don't go on any organised tours - ferry is cheap.

Forget any organised trip, cost a fortune.Get on the bus to Amalfi ,someone else to do the driving and you get to see the stunning coast,then get a ferry back to Sorrento and see it from the sea.

Dont miss the chance to see Pompeii,just get on the train in town and it takes you straight there at a fraction of the price of anything organised.

Go early and when you get in just go straight to the back of the site away from the crowds milling around the entrance, then work your way back at leisure.Take water only 2 tiny refreshment areas on the whole site,then if you havent had enough the same train will take you to Herculaneum on the coast, smaller but just as impressive

Crawshawbooth is right. Herculaneum is also worth a visit. Much smaller but more intact.

 

Depends where you go to in Napoli. We loved Pozzuoli and the area around the Fuorigrotta. Then again, we were with family and they got us to places your everyday tourist probably wouldn't find.

Have a look on Viator.com at the trips on there for ideas then source your own way of doing things. Ischia is also meant to be a lovely Island and just as easy as Capri to get to - probably just as expensive too.

 

Cheers folks, looking seriously in to going to this part of the world myself too in October. Not yet looked at trains but might take in Pisa if times are ok. Nothing there though apart from a wonky tower
