Why Did We Play Wolves On A Friday ?

Looking back at the 1963/64 season, we was above Birmingham City in the relegation zone with Ipswich already relegated, our goal average was better than Brum's and a point better, and we played Wolves at home and lost 0-4. The day after, Brum played Sheff Utd at home and smashed them 3-0 on the last day of the season and stayed up. Still puzzles me why we chose a day to play earlier and giving a rival advantage.

Believe it or not, it has. It would never happen these days.😄

Its an easy answer.  It was to give Birmingham the best possible chance of stopping up and to try to get Bolton relegated.

The same thing happened in 1982 when Cardiff were allowed to play their last 2 games after us knowing they needed 2 wins to stop up.  They won the first then luckily for us lost the 2nd at home to Luton.  Its official, the world's against us.

Can only assume it had been arranged well in advance - 6 teams had completed their fixtures the previous weekend , and the following day ( last day of the season ) there were only 7 matches played so it was not a full programme of matches .

By all accounts it was the absence of Freddie Hill through injury that cost us - and the decision to play Dave Hatton as centre forward.

We played 3 games in 4 days over Easter, can you imagine the screeching nowadays?

When the fixtures came out it would've been a full complement of matches to match the round of fixtures played on Oct 19th. So it still remains a mystery.

All the other divisions more or less finished the season on that date.

Pretty certain that the Holcombe Hunt horse racing at Harwood took place on the Sat and we always

tried not too clash as it was still a big day out for the locals.  Was at Burnden that miserable night.

Up til then supporting the Wanderers had been plain sailing. Usual bad planning. We could have

lived with a poor crowd in order to stay up.

Thank's very much for the explanation.

Presumably no subs in those days as well.  And probably zero squad rotation, I bet you needed a broken leg to get left out of one of the games.  By the time of the last 20 minutes of the 3rd game I bet it was walking pace at some games.

Agree - game kicking off on last Friday before xmas when everyone had been on the ale wasnt Plods wisest move

Brilliant, i walked up Bradford Rd that night for my lift, and the Mancs were fucking furious on that street and backed down.

The best roller coaster ride in your life will be watching Bolton Wanderers.

It’s like a roller coaster interspersed with the ghost train and dodgems !
