The 100

Surprised there isn’t a thread on this. Unless I’ve missed it.  Enjoyed the match last night on tv. (Matt Parkinson just taken a wicket as I type this)

Doesn’t seem right to see players who normally play for ‘your’ team playing against you. Good entertainment though.

It is cheap,  it is quick, it can be exciting and it keeps cricket in this country.  We can try an cling to traditions if we want but the bigger picture needs to be taken into account.   Goi

what puts me off - as an armchair fan - are the graphics, both the garish colours and theyre more complicated than need be, the fact its manchester and that theres lancs players playing for other teams

its all a bit 'i can't be arsed'

Didn't they only bring it in to get cricket into the Olympics as 20/20 is too long?

Even though this is about three overs shorter its hardly much different

My first live 100 was interesting. Saw a few of the women in Oz. during the winter. Disappointed with Beth Mooney. She was great over there. The men’s was exciting whilst Salt and Buttler were together then it all became a bit stale.

Great for families and kids. Anything that gets people into cricket is a plus for me. I’ll stick to watching on tv though.

I've heard a few people say that, and I can't disagree. I've heard a few people refer to it as "cricket for people who don't understand cricket" which is clearly aimed at kids who just want to see the ball smashed around all over the place, which the 100 should offer them

As mentioned above, trying to follow the scores with the graphics shown on TV is hard work, and they are very garish and overly colourful, again presumably to appeal to kids, and attempt to get them into cricket form an early age

Problem is kids will see all the glory in smashing sixes and fours and not taking wickets

Could end up with a shortage of decent bowlers

My first introduction to professional cricket was watching the one day cricket at the time (John Player & Gillette) when Lancashire were ‘kings’ All red ball then but still exciting compared with Test Cricket.
Kerry Packer changed things and I can’t honestly say that it was for the worst. White ball cricket is very popular in its many forms. The 100 is just another.
I still think Test Cricket is the best and so do my two sons before anyone says it’s an age thing.😉

There's nothing it can achieve that the T20 Blast couldn't achieve if it were given the same billing

The fact the ECB blocks out August for this shite is a joke

It’s a huge inconvenience for the players that the Test series was condensed as it was. It was also one of the best Test series I’ve seen and I’ve seen a few. The 100 is scheduled for the school holidays. It’s proving popular with families and people who would probably never consider watching cricket. (Free to air helps a lot)

It has its faults. It isn’t shite.

By its own admission, the ECB has no evidence it's attracting new people to the sport

It poses a direct threat to the county structure, and by extension the international team

Can i think the hundred and 4 day county cricket are both on borrowed time

There were over 10,000 at OT on Wednesday that wouldn’t have been there otherwise. I was there last Friday for a County Championship match with less than 500 on. I enjoyed the CC match more but it ain’t about me.
I heard the same sort of stuff back in the 70’s with Kerry Packer.
I could go back further as I’ve mentioned above with the John Player League and Gillette cup. The same views as yours were expressed then.

The point is, the John Player League and the Gillette Cup were played by the counties

This shite isn't

It's purpose is to wrest power from the counties to the ECB because like the BCCI the ECB wants its own cash cow

Four years in and the ECB has no evidence it's attracting new people to the sport, and the negative impact on the cricketing calendar is huge

Its impact on the calendar hasn’t affected the popularity of the sport though. In fact, imo, it’s getting more popular, in all its formats. My Indian neighbour, has no interest in Test Cricket but loves the IPL. I’m the opposite. It takes all kinds but at the end of the day it’s cricket.
The politics of cricket are like all politics, subjective.

The consequences are yet to rear their head

Franchises don't produce and develop young talent because they have no youth set-up

What they do do is poach the talent the counties have produced for the prime of the cricketing season, with the compensation paid to the counties not guaranteed long-term

Funny that

The Hundred achieves nothing the T20 Blast couldn't achieve if it were given the same billing, but the ECB won't give it the same billing because the counties retain the revenue from the T20 Blast and the ECB don't like that

Good luck developing batsman capable of building an innings with the four-day format shunted to the start and end of the calendar

Yon indian opener is well capable of playing test cricket

Hes not been schlepping through low standard 'first class cricket'

I saw him first out hitting Buttler

Slow, slow, slow test cricket is dead

IPL is developing very good players for modern test cricket

However, t'100 isnt ever gonna be IPL

The counties are and always will be the lifeblood of English cricket. The franchise is huge bonus financially to the counties participating and the players also. It’s just one month in a 6 month season.
As for developing cricketers for Test Match standard, the white ball game in its many formats has changed the red ball game for the better without doubt.
There will always be a 4 day format. Whether it be County Championship, Sheffield Shield or other.

Does anybody actually watch that these days?

For me, if all the formats, the worst is the 50 over format, that's just my own opinion though

I’ve been to 4 CC matches this year ( just one day each) I enjoy it but it’s not for everyone. I’ve also been to a couple of T20 and a fifty over match and the 100. Add to that a Test match here, 2 in Australia and one in NZ.
Sorry to sound smug but at the end of the day, people will watch whatever form of cricket they like.
The more the merrier.👍

There's a difference between slow, slow, slow test cricket and knowing how to build an innings

The more influence and power The Hundred has, the less friendly it will be to the counties

We'll have to agree to disagree on the threat posed to the health of the county structure

The T20 Blast is/was popular

But the point is more about the development of players

I agree the domestic 50-over format is in trouble

I only dip in and out of cricket, so no expert, but it all seems a bit Liv Golf to me, made up teams, (it's attracted some proper names, would be interested to see what they're being paid) weird kits all sponsored by crisps, and noisy with a load of fireworks

I've watched 2 games this week and I'm looking forward to going on Monday

I'll report back with an expert analysis

Apart from the overs thing, the cricket on the pitch is the same as any other white ball cricket. Played by some of the best players in the world.
It’s everything else that makes it more for families and kids. The screen qr code things, DJ and entertainment around the ground. Get your sponge hand and 4/6 card and enjoy it.👍
