Our longest runs

No proper footie til Friday, so for the sake of summat to do thought I'd dive into some of our longest runs against other teams.

Starting with the good stuff - our longest winning runs including both home and away, all competitions.

Our record is 8 wins on the bounce. We've done that against 3 different teams. There's 2 further teams we've won 7 on the bounce, and a further 3 we've won 6 consecutive games.

So without cheating, can anyone guess the 8 teams we've had our best winning runs against. Unlimited imaginary prizes available for best guesses.

    JJ against West Ham.

  • Last bit of stats for now then ... We've won 7 league games on the bounce a few times, but not since 96/97 when we did it twice. Previously did it in 1891/92, 1899/00, 1904/05, 1905/06, 1908

Has anyone said Blackpool.

I know we've had a poor run but my memory had us better than them for a while.

Blackpool have been done (and is correct).

Recap with one left:

Grimsby - 8 wins between 1996-2000

Port Vale - 8 1900-1933 (our first 8 games v them. also had 7 on the bounce 1997-2017)

West Ham - 8 2008-11

Shrewsbury - 7 1990-2017

Blackpool - 7 1896-1909 (our first 7 games)

Glossop North End - 6 1904-1911

Luton - 6 1898 - 1955 (first 6 games)

?????? - 6 ????-????

Two clues for the remaining team:

1. they're in our league

2. it was a fair while back

Derby?

Is the correct answer! 6 on the bounce 1904-07.

Considering how poor our record is against them overall, it's nice to know there was at least one spell when they'd be sick of the sight of us. No bugger alive to remember it mind.

Good one that pal ๐Ÿ‘.

Only run Iโ€™m interested in now, is this 7 game winning run till the end of the season! ๐Ÿคฃ

P'shaw. They were recovering from losing the 1903 Cup final 6-0, to Bury.

Last bit of stats for now then ...

We've won 7 league games on the bounce a few times, but not since 96/97 when we did it twice.

Previously did it in 1891/92, 1899/00, 1904/05, 1905/06, 1908/09, and 1934/35.

Six on the bounce a bit more common - and would do nicely taking us into the final day showdown with everything (potentially) to play for. Did 6 most recently earlier this season and again in our league 2 season 20/21.

Focus on 6 for now then sneak the 7th on the last day.

Here's something to think about.ย

Over the last couple of seasons or so, we've had some notably big wins.

Last season, iirc, we had a couple of consecutive 5-0 wins.

How many times has that happened (5 or more will do), and can anyone remember them, if they happened?

If there have been consecutive 5+ nil scorelines, what is the longest run of them?

I've no idea mind, so maybe some research required!

cant remember but when it started to click under rioch, nov/dec, we banged a few 4s and 5s in, including 4 at fulham

Fulham (a) 4-1
Burnley (h) 4-0
Bradford (h) 5-0

best I can recall is 95

Charlton (h) 5-1
Wolves (h) 5-1

Unsurprisingly, scoring 5 in back to back games is a rarity. Including cup games, we've done it 7 times by my reckoning, one of which was extended to 3 games. They were (all at home and league unless stated);

Derby 7-1 & WBA 7-0 30 Nov and 7 Dec 1898.

Notts County (A) 5-3 & Distillery 10-2 (FA cup) 11th and 18th Jan 1890

Sheff Utd 13-0 (FA cup) & Stoke 5-0 1st and 8th Feb 1890

Burton Swifts (A) 5-2 & Barnsley (A) 6-1 & Loughborough 7-0 23rd & 26th & 30th Dec 1899

Everton 5-0 & Huddersfield 7-1 19 Dec 1929 & 1 Jan 1930

Charlton 5-1 & Wolves 5-1 21 Jan & 4th Feb 1995

Peterborough (A) 5-0 & MK Dons 5-0 11th & 14th Feb 2023

So last seasons was special in that it was the first back-to-back 5+ to nil we had in 130+ years.

Consecutive 4+ much more common - pushing 40 times we've done that (no way I'm typing them all out!!), with 4 occasions we've done 3 in a row. We've not done three in a row scoring 4+ since 1964 though.

Zico's run above was interrupted by a 0-0 at Rochdale and 1-1 home to Bury in the Autoglass and a 4-0 cup win v Rochdale. So yes, Zico's bob on in terms of league games.

(Data I've used above is all games - I'll check league games only when I get round to it).

Just checked on league games only. Doesn't add any to 5+ games, but obviously drops out the ones including cup matches.

3 in a row 4+ adds Zico's 1992 run v Fulham / Burnley / Bradford (from memory, didn't we score all 5 in the second half or have I made that up?).ย

Prior to 1992 we last did 3 on the bounce in 1964 - did 4 that time; Preston 5-1, Middsbro 4-2, Ipswich 4-1, and Plymouth 6-1, all at home.

Pre that, you have to go back to 1904.

So we're only five games off setting a new club recordย ๐Ÿ˜

Another quick one - think this is easier - before we get back to some proper footie.

Our longest current winless runs, includes home and away, league and cup.

Top seven teams.

Rogers lot must one of them.

9-10 games maybe

Serious question.

Do you honestly think we can win even 6 of them?

Chelsea. Around 8-10?

5, which could be enough.

Stevenage - W

Reading - W

Bristol - W

Portsmouth - D

Shrewsbury - W

Port Vale - W

Peterborough - D

Donโ€™t get me wrong, Iโ€™m not saying that is more than likely, easy or expected.

And Iโ€™m well aware that is a massive shift in form.

But on our day, with the chances we create, our potential and record of scoring goals and our ability to shut out sides, itโ€™s not daft to suggest itโ€™s possible.ย

Chelsea's our longest current win-less run - 19 games. It's also our longest ever run without a win against any team. Our last win was Dec 2003.

I were there

Great pre Christmas weekend session in London that wasย

SKD turned up in a pub near the ground after the game about half five as wellย

I'd say some of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea to add to Man U. We stopped upsetting the big guns in those last 5 premier league seasons
