When did they put seats in the Great Lever and how come. I've asked a few people and no one ever has a proper answer. Sayin they think it was too dangerous? And sometime in the seventies.... Or they just go misty eyed then start singin 'We all live in a Great Lever End.' All I remember the Great Lever as was with those blue seats lookin like a really bad school assembly. Seems a bit of a waste lookin back although Burnden Terrace was hardly a library.

There was one seat on the Great Lever End that was directly behind a post. On my way out from the Burnden Terrace at the end of one game, I sat in it for about ten seconds just so that it wasn't the only seat that nobody had sat in. There was also another seat that was all on its own.

I think it was the start of making Burnden Park an all-seater stadium. Never caught on.

i thought it was because of all those hoolie types who were ruining the game and they put seats in to change the clientelle, only then to allow chelsea in the burnden seats who, in turn, taking offence to 21st century ideas, promptly removed them.

Simon Inglis's "Football grounds of England & Scotland" says the Lever End was seated in 1978 as this was cheaper than upgrading the crush barriers and keeping the end as a terrace. Not aware of anything regarding seating as a law or League requirement until the Taylor report.

I once went on a 'guided tour' of Burnden Park when the company I worked for sponsored a match. Peter Nicholson told us one of the reasons it had been made all seater is because that it had been poorly constructed and there were issues regarding the safety of the entire terrace, so they had to restrict the amount of weight that could be on it at any one time. I presume it's not true, but why would he say it - unless it was better than just admitting it was a crap idea

I seem to remember Bradford doing the same just before the fire!!
