its all going too far

folk who've never been anywhere near a football ground, waving flags and wearing england t shirts, replica shirts, everywhere you look

get a job you bastards

i am with you on this one casino, just because you wear a shirt and have a flag does not make you more patriotic, it all reminds me of when you were a kid for 2 minutes you were into skateboarding and then it was thrown in the shed, it is just the latest craze, in a month it will all die down and they will be back to talking about big brother or some other mindless moronic shite.

Disagree with you on this. I think it will make people more patriotic. Something like this brings the whole country together, and before 2 weeks ago my 4-year old would not have known what the St. Georges Cross was or stood for.

i have no problem with kids under 10, waving flags and wearing kits but there is a sizeable minority of adults who are not really football fans and are just having the crack, suppose there is nothing wrong with that, but it all seems a bit false to me.

Where do you draw the line though Mounts?

Who is and who isn't entitled to support England?

Not having a dig, just pointing out that there are different 'levels' of supporter...sure, lots of people are in the pubs watching England shouting songs they've never heard before and getting the words wrong...but who cares?

I'm just glad they are enjoying it and that people want their country to win.

I enjoyed England winning the Union world cup, but I'm no expert on it...doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching them surely?

But just what is the point of having England flags on your car in this country. The World Cup is taking place in Germany. I can understand having a flag on your car in Germany but the vast majority of the people in this country are English and presumably support England and want them to win. They don't need to put a flag on their car to show that they are English.

Just a bit of collective spirit Biff, a rare show of solidarity!

It's like flags at games, you don't need them because you are obviously supporting Bolton...it's just expressing your support

My only gesture is a St George's cross on my desk at work...only because I work with about 50% foreigners...I'm itching for some prick to tell me I can't display it, I'm absolutely dying for someone to try it :D

In that case then why doesn't everybody fly a Bolton flag or a flag from the team they support on days when the team is not playing.

Because the people we are talking about are plastic fans :D

The world cup is a special occasion, I don't know why everyone is getting so uptight about 'casual' supporters joining in

I disagree. Liken the World Cup to Tennis. In the case of the football, every couple of years, Euro Championship and World Cup brings people together who have little or no interest in club football. By the same token, Wimbledon fortnight makes most people in Britain tennis oficianados. Live and let live I say. You never know, someone might just get their interest in football ignited to such a degree that they decide to buy a S/T for their local club. Hopefully, that local club will be Bolton.

But those people don't need to go around shouting we support England. They are English so we know they do. Now if they were in Germany it would not be easy to pick them out as English so wear your colours there. I mean loads of houses with flags draped over them and cars with hundreds of flags on them will not scare the opposition because they won't see them.

Tell you something, those poxy little flags that you Englanders are waving on your cars, they're nowt compared with the huge great feck-off ones the Eyties are waving out of the backs of theirs. Not as many of them but absolutely HUGE.

I have never understood shouting encouragement at the telly. cockends shouting 'come on XXX' and clapping XXX.

I know. When Bolton played Man U at Old Trafford and away supporters were not allowed, I watched the game on a big screen at Burnden Park. When the teams came out there were people watching on the screen clapping. I don't think the players would have heard them.

All this waving flags and dressing in England football gear is nothing to do with patriotism and more to do with jumping on a bandwagon. How many people are flying the flag of St George on a foreign made car. Those people who are claiming to be patriotic are those whom Dr Johnson was talking about when he said that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel.

The bloke at the back of my house has a flagpole in his garden and on appropriate days he flies the flag of St George or the Union Flag. A lot of the time he flies the Portuguese flag but I don't know why. Since the World Cup began, he has been flying a flag made up of the flags of all the countries taking part.

You'll have to have a word with him now Biff.

I think it's called creating an atmosphere as it's the next best thing to not being there.
