Duff steal at "5million"

Newcastle have revealed that they snapped up Damien Duff from Chelsea for ??5 million.

The winger was deemed surplus to requirements by Blues chief Jose Mourinho and was linked with Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool.

It had been widely reported that a fee of ??10 million would prise him away from Stamford Bridge, but Newcastle confirmed in a statement to the Stock Exchange that they had landed a player who cost Chelsea ??17 million when they signed him from Blackburn for ??5 million.

"The directors of Newcastle United PLC are pleased to announce that Damien Duff passed his medical and his transfer from Chelsea has been completed for a fee of ??5 million," read the statement.

"The player has agreed personal terms and signed a five-year contract ending in June 2011."

Newcastle are set to unveil Duff at a press conference at 2pm on Monday and skysports.com will provide you with all the reaction from St James' Park.

What a buy for any club at that price.

do you know how much he's on each week

just out of interest

my opinion, for what its worth is that newcastle have once again paid massively over the odds, and will continue doing so for another 5 years

I reckon he'll spend 50% of this season in the treatment room

and thats just for his plastic surgery

probably do his hamstrings too

Be honest chaps, this is a fantastic bit of business by Newcastle.

Duff is a proven quality provider who chips in with a few himself.

If it really is ??5m, it's probably good business.

However I suspect it's ??5m down and a load of clauses amounting to another ??5m.

plus, well in excess of 3 million a year in wages, is my guess

and he'll be over 30 for half the contract

not sure thats the best time to be having somebody with dodgy hamstrings who relies so much on pace

fcuk, they'll buy owen next 8-[

anyway, we'll see

when his wages are probably the same again every year?

i think not!

will he be able to keep luque out of the team ?

Lets face it he's a good player on his day but the fact he can't hold down a place at Chelsea says a lot. That Dutch diving tw@t is shite and he's the only real threat to his position (excluding Cole who seems to play where he likes).

??70k a week i've read somewhere

On his day he can be very good but I very much doubt he's going to be the geordies messiah. Just another big money signing by Newcastle that will soon be brought down a level or two.

From the games I saw last season he was nothing like the player he used to be... Chelsea wouldn't be selling if he was anything like.

He will FLOP! FACT

Is this what it???s come to? There???s no activity at Bolton so we???re slagging off players bought by other clubs.

For ??5million Duff is about as good as you can get. FFS, ??4million buys you Diouf!!

diouf is every bit as good a footballer imo.

duff is injury prone hence the cheap pricetag.

diouf is a bit of a c??nt hence the cheap pricetag.

but i rather have a c??nt than a sicknote...

plus dioufs wages are half that of duffs...

You don't learn do you, homer? ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

I agree with Homer on this point

Is this what it???s come to? . . . slagging off players bought by other clubs.

Well for my part I wasn't slagging anyone off really...

... I was simply offering up my opinion that 'Damo' was poor last season everytime I saw him play. particularly in the big games where his input was needed. It is also my opinion that he will be equally as bad next season, hence whatever price is paid he will flop!

My thoughts had nothing to do with Bolton Wanderers!

Yeh i have read and heard that his wages are about 45 / 50k a week after the clubs who were in for him didnt want to pay him his 65k a week wages that he is on at Chelsea.

Newcastle won't win trophies so they buy trophy players

this being a prime example

whether he'll be any good or not is irrelevant, they've bought a name and if 10,000 turn up to St James Park when he is unveiled it will be good business for them
