In Safe Hands - Bolton's Best Goalies.

Well the best five in my lifetime -

Eddie Hopkinson

Arguably the greatest goalkeeper ever to wear the Bolton Wanderers jersey (even though he was only 5 foot 9 inches tall!). Hopkinson was a gentleman and a true club great who showed enormous pride at playing for the team in each of his 578 appearances. He was a vital cog in the team and a more than able replacement for fellow great Stan Hanson.

Born: 29th October 1935, Wheatley Hill, Durham, England

Signed From: Oldham Athletic, November 1952

Retired, November 1969

Bolton Debut: 18th August 1956 versus Blackpool (H), Division 1

Died April 25 in Royton, Lancashire, England at the age of 68 - Rest in Peace

Barry Siddall

The retirement of Charlie Wright in 1973 lead to the talented Siddall getting fastracked into first team action after only a few games experience. He was an ever present for the club over three seasons until he made the move up the divisions to join Sunderland for a rather modest fee of ??80,000.

Born: 12th September 1954, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England

Signed From: Apprentice, January 1972

Sold To: Sunderland, September 1976, ??80,000

Bolton Debut: 7th October 1972 versus Walsall (A), Division 3

Barry got itch feet after he left Bolton - he went on to play for - Sunderland, Darlington (loan), Port Vale, Blackpool (loan), Stoke City, Tranmere Rovers (loan), Manchester City (loan), Stockport County, Hartlepool United, West Bromwich Albion, Mossley, Carlisle United, Chester City, Northwich Victoria, Preston North End, Bury, Burnley, Lincoln City, Birmingham City, and Rossendale United

Where is he now - in November 2001 it was reported that Barry was now living in Kirkham and working localy as a postman.

Jim (Seamus) McDonagh

One of the most talented goalkeepers ever to turn out for Bolton over the course of two seperate spells. McDonagh was an important and irrepressible member of the Wanderers squad to achieve promotion back to the First Division in 1978.

Born: 6th October 1952, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England

Signed From: Rotherham United, August 1976, ??15,000

Sold To: Everton, July 1980, ??250,000

Signed From: Everton, August 1981, Exchange for Mike Walsh

Sold To: Notts County, July 1983, Free Transfer

Bolton Debut (1st spell): 2nd October 1976 versus Blackpool (H), Division 2

Bolton Debut (2nd spell): 29th August 1981 versus Chelsea (A), Division 2

First Goal (2nd spell): 15th January 1983 versus Burnley (H), Division 2

Keith Branagan

One of the best Bolton keepers of all time following in the footsteps of Pym Hanson, Hopkinson and McDonagh. Branny appeared in over 200 games for the club having been plucked from obscurity at Millwall in 1992 by Bruce Rioch.

2005-keith-branagan.jpg

Born - 10th July, 1966 in Fulham

Signed from Millwall July 1992 - Free Transfer

Sold to Ipswich March 2000 - Free Transfer

Bolton debut 15th August 1992 v Huddersfield Town (H) Division 3

Jussi Jaaskelainen

Jaaskelainen now enters his eighth full season as a Bolton Wanderers player and over the years he has gradually developed into one of the best goalkeepers in England. Excellent all round shot stopper with great agility, his presence is a key feature in the Bolton team

Was it not Branagan who went off with an injury and the final score was 0-0? A night game! I went that game also! I remember it being a bit 'naughty' outside before and after the game!

It was a mid-week game but the score was 1-1 (McGinlay)

It was a midweek game at Stoke. Branagan had been sent off for a foul. Shilton came on as sub and his first touch was to pick the ball out of the net from the penalty. His next game for Bolton was in the play off semi final against Wolves at Molyneaux.

I thought Branigan wasn't in goal and Aiden Davidson was the one to be sent off hence our 3rd goalie (England England's number one!) came in as a replacement. Or is my memory hazy?

Cracking night though, as I recall Super John didn't hear the final whistle as he was still steaming down the pitch with a few Stoke fans following him in hot pursuit after a minor pitch invasion whilst the rest of the team were making a sharp exit down the tunnel.

Where the bloody hell is Kevin Rose ?

Gavin Ward scored for Tranmere at the weekend.

Really Biff?

Is there a time delay where you live?

Leave the Horwich digs eh Big City Boy?

It wasn't a dig at Horwich. It was a dig at Biff for posting something I posted yesterday.

Well I never saw what you posted yesterday.

Post 21 on this very same thread.

On that subject gents, how can the goal be awarded to Gavin Ward?

It was an indirect free kick that was touched into the back of his own net by the opposition goalkeeper. If he had not touched the ball, then the 'goal' would have been disallowed as it was from an indirect free kick.

Surely, has to go down as an own goal?

mention must go to one of the biggest characters we`ve had at club

Charlie Wright used to talk to the crowd while the ball was down the other end

never forget him rollicking a ballboy for giving him the ball back to quick when we were 1-0 up

retired after some dirty bastard stamped on his back at halifax

The Manny Road site has him down as full International Honours - but does not say for whom.

He is said to be born on the 11th December 1938, in Glasgow but his nationality is shown as Hong Kong.

The Sottish Football Archive do not have him listed as playing for Scotland - so I guess you are right that he played for Hong Kong

Steve Banks profile below -

Banksy was signed from Blackpool in March 1999 (before the days of the transfer window) for a modest ??50,000.

We were led to believe that we had acquired a great keeper on the cheap - and it was with great anticipation that looked forward to his debut at Oxford a few days later.

Well what a load of cobblers! He seemed much to small to be a keeper was my first impression, and this was very much confirmed when he started to drop crossed balls. Oh dear!

I think it may be kinder to describe his stay at the club as having to compete with a number of other keepers during his three year stay and never really getting a full run of games in the side due to the form of Jussi.

Banks was eventually given a free transfer to Stoke in December 2002.

Steve moved on from there to first Wimbledon and then Gillingham until August 2005 - following the Gills relegation - he moved to Hearts.

He is still there, as the understudy to Craig Gordon and as only played a handful of games during his stay.

Here's a picture of him in his Bolton days.

Charlie played for Hong Kong while on National Service in a game against Peru. The final score was 1-1, but, to use an old phrase "if it was a boxing match, they would have stopped it". Charlie was brilliant, amd was a national hero in Hong Kong for getting them a result they had no chance of obtaining against some pretty classy opposition.

Loved to watch him play, but hardly gets included amongst the list of finest BWFC managers... I wonder why?

Sam Ashton I reckon

:D
