Following on from something Smiffs mentioned in another thread, i have to agree that we look back at Burnden with rose tinted specs. I would imagine that, if we were suddenly beamed back to Burnden now,we'd have a lot more moaners (although probably a lot less JCL's). I started going to Burnden as a kid in the sixties,and i can honestly say i can only remember the "special atmosphere" on maybe a couple of dozen occasions, the rest of the time is was an aniquated sh*thole, with less than 10,000 on, and on a wet wednesday night against the likes of Doncaster or Mansfield it could be thouroughly depressing. We HAD to move forward,or we would not be where we are now.What do you think, are our memories of Burnden seen through nostalgic, rose tinted specs?

The difference for me is the rituals of a match day at Burnden, the whole day planned and pretty much the same every week. I always felt that there was stonger feeling of togetherness with all the fans when at Burnden. I even miss trying to avoid the puddles at the back of Burnden Terrace. However, i think the reebok could have been just as good and apart from the location the biggest difference is money and americanisation of our sport. Music on goals, flying flags and fireworks just don't appeal to me, and the money means that there is a new type of fan rarely seen at Burnden.

 

The shite that goes on after we score, in terms of flags and crappy music, is a particular pet hate of mine. It's as if we're not trusted to celebrate a goal on our own. We're also the laughing stock of the entire Premiership for having fu??king "I Feel Good" blaring out after every goal!

there was no way the club could build the reebok (or a ground like it) at burnden! there wasnt the space.

 

 

sorry I don't believe that hype...the compulsary purchase of the terraced houses as Blackburn did would of created a huge site...

 

the police and the council wanted it out of town...plus with the land given to the club for free...warburton, mcbain and co could line their pockets even further...

 

fact is we wouldn't have the atmosphere problem if OUR ground was in the centre of OUR town..

the improvement wouldn't have got planning permission!

 

thats the main crux of it all!

 

without doing a monaco and building a carpark under the stadium there was no way the plans would've been approved!

balls to all the surrounding infastructure...at the Middlebrook...

Burnden had changed by the end too, no standing on the yellow gangways etc. Arguably the situation would have been just the same at Burnden as it is at the Reebok.

Using the powers of CAD plus OS plans i've discovered the area that demolishing Normid and the terrace housing would create would be 65000 square meters, the reebok and carparks etc take up 145000 square meters more than twice the area at available at Burnden!

 

dont get me wrong i would've loved to stay at burnden but the space just wasn't available!!

Also Manchester road would not be able to handle the increase in traffic that the stadium would create, as there was little to no parking at burnden the vehicular traffic on manchester road was pretty light compared to how it would be given the aditional parking

 

as much as we'd all loved to have stayed at burnden there was no way it was going to happen!

correct if you miss the bus or you're lift you're fcuked when coming from little hulton or farnworth

we can moan all day long we wont move,lets just take our club back from the money men by taking a stuborn view on things like not spending money in the club shop and not spending money at the kiosk's

this is the only way we can hurt them

OK, The new stadium was built in Burnden and we have been there for 10 years now. A few of us would still be enjoying the convenience of it and our rituals remain but what would have changed really.

It would be still all seater and no specific section to create an atmosphere

Sky would still have us kicking off at all hours on different days except 3pm on a Saturday

There would still be fireworks, flags and music when goals are scored

The development of football would still mean that a different type of fan would be attending

 

So all in all if we were at Burnden we would be on this site moaning about how the old days were different. Personally I preferred Burnden and would loved to have stayed there, but lets remember Burnden as it was and I for one have some fantastic memories there which i am glad haven't been tainted by still being there with how football is today.

They could have bought the dog track site and built a car park there.
