October 26, 200619 yr There are some fickle folk on here! wasnt long ago we lost in a pre season at Burnley and all was doom and gloom!! now were going to get in the champions league!! Not suprisingly its the same folk who have used both comments! so come on... as i said right at the start, STAY POSITIVE BUT STAY REALISTIC
October 26, 200619 yr Why is CL not realistic? We are third without playing particularly well. We are 9 points ahead of a Liverpool team who are vulnerable at the back, have a lot of games to play, are under intense negative media scruntiny and pressure (and unlike us dont appear to be responding positively to it), have signed players like Pennant and Bellamy who IMO are not CL players, and their one superstar seems out of form. I also think that Arsenal are also vulnerable as well, although they have looked good recently. Apart from a superb performance against Man U, they have been flat track bullies to teams near the bottom, but a better indication of their improvement on last year will come against the likes of us and Blackburn. They have had particularly poor results against Boro(h) and City(a). Of the others who else is going to challenge? Everton look better than last year, I was impressed with Blackburn on sunday but no one else has suggested to me that they have what it takes. And to show the consistency of my views on this - see this threadTop 4 Vulnerability
October 26, 200619 yr Stop getting carried away, we're in a false position and will no doubt go on a run of 15 straight losses.........starting this Saturday. We're doomed, doomed I tell you
October 26, 200619 yr First aim every season is now: 29 games to collect another 20 or so points to avoid relegation. Anything beyond that is a brucey bonus.
October 26, 200619 yr some city fan on century last night thought they were still destined for a top 6 finish...
October 26, 200619 yr I would take that now damn right would love to finish in the top six again party time
October 26, 200619 yr We are third without playing particularly well. as casino pointed out, in some games we've played very well indeed pompey for one job done 2nd half newcastle the defence has been very good if you mean playing well without scoring loads then maybe, but that's not our style, then again, that's why we bought anelka
October 26, 200619 yr as casino pointed out, in some games we've played very well indeed pompey for one job done 2nd half newcastle the defence has been very good if you mean playing well without scoring loads then maybe, but that's not our style, then again, that's why we bought anelka We have defended extremely well and Jussi has been excellent, and we beat Portsmouth, Liverpool and Blackburn through sheer determination to protect a lead, good goalkeeping and a bit of luck. But I think the attacking part of the team has been misfunctioning, and is capable of much better. We need better passes from midfield to the strikers, something I think we are capable of. I thought 2nd half at Newcastle it was coming together, and there were a few decent breakaways at Blackburn, so maybe Man U, who will give us more room to play may see it come together. Also, IMHO, whilst being a Nolan fan, I think that possibly Tal or Stelios would provide better service to Anelka than Nolan does.
October 26, 200619 yr Also, IMHO, whilst being a Nolan fan, I think that possibly Tal or Stelios would provide better service to Anelka than Nolan does. both are probably better on the ball, but neither could contribute as much to the team (though a banned nolan is no use obviously) not nearly close, i reckon
October 27, 200619 yr i think the goal for the club has always been to finnish in the top half if we can push into the top 6 is fantastic and champions league is possible if one of the big four have a bad season and we have are best ever season. it looks great so far but i would still be more than happy with a top ten finnish.
October 27, 200619 yr 6th by the way is where we will end the season Not a definite UEFA Cup spot that, we would be relying on one of the top 5 to win the league cup or two of the top 5 to compete in the FA Cup final. Let us do it ourselves - 5th for me!
