Manager Rumour

Featured Replies

He did break Owen into the England squad aswell, the man currently destined to be our country's leading goalscorer.

Didn't Hoddle also say that Michael Owen wasn't a natural goalscorer?

I wouldn't let Hoddle within 100 miles of the Reebok. He'd turn us into a laughing stock.

No, that was Andy Cole.

Did you miss the bit I said about Italy 0-0 and the 2nd round world cup game in 1998 vs Argentina - or did you just choose to ignore it?

He didnt do a bad job at Swindon, Chelsea and Southampton neither from what I can recall.

So my only understanding from your criteria from above is that he isn't a top manager because he's got a bit of an ego. Guess that makes Fergie, Bill Shankly, BSA and Terry Venables all shite aswell.

The fact remains, Hoddle can't get a look in for a top job, or even a decent job. Considering the jobs he's had, England, Chelsea, Spurs, even Wolves to a lesser extent he has had the chance to prove himself a top class manager. He didn't do this in any of those jobs.

As for giving Owen a chance it was hardly a bolt from the blue was it? People had been raving about Owen for years before when he was a kid. It just the same as Sven giving Rooney a chance, it wasn't a masterstroke it was just sensible managment.

Granted he did well with England in the two games your reffering to, but what about the "genius" of playing Matt le Tissier against Italy at home in the qualifiers? We finished second in our group in the World Cup to the giants of football Romania, which meant we ended up playing the bloody Argies.

So comparing Hoddle to the great managers you mentioned is utter bollocks, if any of them had egos like you claimed it certainly didn't stop them being top managers. Unlike spooky Glenn who is happy as a greyhound with a belly full of piss doing his bit on Skysports.

Hoddle a top manager

Beg to differ again my friend.

Owen wasn't pushed into the spotlight like Rooney has been by the media. Rooney IMO is actually not that great. Produces sporadic moments of (lets accept it) genius, but sorry as a goalscorer he aint no Owen.

Now you disputing that Fergie, Bill Shankly, BSA and El Tel dont have ego's - come on your shitting me - surely??!!! Put your fishing line away sunshine!

As a pundit, Hoddle generally gets it right - IM(very humble)O.

Romania with the likes of Hagi - where quite a decent team them days, but granted wasn't one of Mr Hoddle's greater days. As for Le-Tissier - he was a quality player who deserved a chance at England level (back in the days when playing for a big team wasn't the only criteria for getting a cap)

Reason Hoddle can't get a job, is not because of his managerial ability, but because of the perception that he is a fruitcake - IMO.

No, that was Andy Cole.

It wasn't, it was Owen.

Hoddle had a problem with big name players, kind of a jealousy thing. Gullit was the same. Bet they were a right pair of pr?cks to train with.

fcuk me, your hard work. Like i said "if, like you claimed" those managers had/have big egos isn't hasn't stopped them being top class managers. In Hoddle's case its has.

As for being a pundit, Andy Gray & Alan Hansen are good pundits. Don't make them good managers.

In any case, Hoddle isn't a top manager. He hasn't won anything, he failed at Wolves, his last big(ish) chance and now can't get a job. If you think thats because people think he's a bit nutty then fair dos. The truth remains though Glenn Hoddle isn't working because nobody thinks he's up to the job.

You should have been a tabloid journalist with your play on words buddy! Fair do's. :drinks:

What about Swindon - play offs?

Play on words  . ragging hell!!!!

Yes he got Swindon promoted via the playoffs. Clutching at straws though aren't we if that constitutes as being a top class manager.

So....sorry to prolong this my journalistic friend - isnt that BSA only achievement? Think Hoddle got Chelsea to an FA Cup final too. We saying Mr Potato Head wasnt a Top Class manager? Just for clarity like.

Not sure I agree entirely with that. If Matty had gone to a big club instead of staying loyal to Southampton for his whole career he?d have got a good few more than eight caps.

His presence wouldn?t have done us any harm in penalty shoot-outs either (Wales don?t play in major championships, do they?)!

You don't seem to be comparing like for like though. BSA achieved so much in his seven years, but it was the nature of what he did with the resources available to him. Did Glenn Hoddle take a club through such an amazing transformation in such a short period of time?

Granted Glenn did well at Swindon and soon fucked them off when he could. But he went on to manage Chelsea and Spurs. For my money he didn't do that well.

Sam will prove over the next few years if he really is as good as he and many people believe.

Lets end it there, if you think Hoddle is a top manager then there is little more point carrying it on. I disagree.....

Back on topic, I think Gartsides pride would stop him looking at other managerial options in the short term. He wants to show the media and probably more importantly BSA that Sammy wasn't a bad choice.

Aye, the big club bias was alive and kicking back then too, without a doubt.

Why? It made good reading!!
