Are those days behind us?

Several teams are splashing the cash for next season. Villa, Portsmouth, Spurs and City all spending coupled with Everton (if they can keep it together) added to the 'big' four. Puts qualifying positions way down the league. I realise that its not set in stone, but they will all be looking for a return on investments.

Are our UEFA dreams and adventures becoming a distant memory or can the lesser clubs still dream of competing for places?

next year or one after they are dumping t'intertoto and we get an extra UEFA place. So 6th will get you in, 7th usually will and 8th may well some years. By the time you get down to 8th the quality will not be so high that we couldn't aspire to it again.

We have also spent big money, Steinsson - 3.5m, Cahill - 5m, Elmander - 11m and Muamba - 5m = 24.5m in 6 months.

We have a pretty good squad now and with the addition of a couple more - we could find ourselves looking at a top half finish again next season :drinks:

Plus Taylor for ?4m, Cohen for ?0.5m and possibly James Harper for about ?3.5m (plus hopefully a couple of other signings in defence and up front)

Bolton have prob, next to spurs and Chelsea spent the most in the Prem over the last 6/7 months. Although in fairness we, prob more than most Prem teams needed to invest.

Christ Col, i hope you dont you lose your voice on Saturday.

If we stopped throwing cup games in the early rounds we could have regular UEFA Cup seasons!

A decent start to the season will hopefully see us taking the League Cup a little more serious this season - saying that though we haven't got the strength in depth at the moment to do anything else!!

spending big money now after last seasons farce is too late, we had the chance to stump up big money for our best ever manager when we were 4th at the time I think if we'd spent big we would have qualified possibly for champs league which meant sh*te loads of revenue and corporate opportunities to then kick on season by season but Gartside bottled it. Megson came in and did a short term job which I still think he had fcuk all to do with keeping us up, a few players realised fizzy pop stuff really wasnt an option and pulled their fingers out. Diouf turned the boro game around when coming on due to injury not tactical genius. We are now spending the money after pooing ourselves last season.

Most of what you wrote is utter shite, and can be picked to pieces but this made me laugh....How the fcuk would we have finished 4th....Living the dream, al la Leeds and then watch us crash and burn.

Kick on season by season WTF? Kick on exactly where from 4th place. Premiership title, Champions League Final..........

Gartside was right not to blow money - spending another 10m in Jan, after already spending 12m the prev summer, wouldn't have guaranteed anything and thatd be 10m we couldn't spend now..... the same 10m that brought Cahill, Steinsson, Taylor to the club and kept us up.

And it's not like Allardyce spent wisely at Newcastle - I'm glad he wasted 30m of their money rather than ours. Maybe Gartside saw that Allardyce was good at what he did, scraping and saving and didn't trust the man to spend a lot of money.

Allardyce got us into Europe...I don't think Megson is a good enough manager.

We've got some good players, but I don't rate the 'ginger Mourinho' at all. As for his spending, he mentions the players and PG & co are the ones trying to land the player, as anyone who can be bothered looking will remember Megsons famous fall-out at WBA when he admitted he had no idea about money when dealing with transfers. BSA did his own groundwork.

Cue the usual arse-lickers....'you're not a true fan'....'you'd be happy if were relegated'...blah blah blah

Are those days behind us?

TBH what is the point in qualifying only to give up part way through the campaign?

From the club's point of view, they're better off just trying to get further in the domestic cup competitions and trying their best to get 1 place higher in the league each season.

UEFA was a distraction (apparently) - and the only benefactors were the fans who had a beano following the team around Europe.

I'd like a really good FA Cup run - something like we had under Rioch. Twas very exciting

and a local away game to a 1st or 2nd div side in round 3!

when was the last time this occured?

only hope is League cup imo

Don't put yourselves down.

I know you're frustrated at the lack of transfer activity.

Oh no, hang on: you signed a guy from Iceland, didn't you? (Kerry katona's brother?)
