What's to love about him?

I do find myself agreeing with Casino, for some strange reason.

I'd have to say, the majority of his woes appear to be self inflicted. If he is aware of his mental illness, which, from reading about him in the press, he is, then he should do whatever he can to help himself or stop whining. He should have enough money to afford the luxury of getting help privately too without having to rely on the NHS.

He was blessed with children. What kind of a selfish c?nt tells them to leave him alone when they apparently want to help him?

Was lucky enough to be at the England Scotland game at Euro 96 when he scored the 'dentist chair' goal.

You can tell how bad his mental state is though: he went out in public with an Asics jacket on.

 

For what it's worth: I think he was probably the most gifted talent we had, but he is following in george best's footprints to the grave.

Yep, getting help for mental illness that has led to alcoholism is that simple. It's like treating a broken finger I guess, turn up to the hospital or clinic and get your cure. Job done.

Yeh probably. I'm no expert on the subject - but i'd guess he has a progressive mental illness that's the root of all his problems.

Read his book a while ago.

 

Its obvious that fhe fella has a serious attention deficit problem. He is also very obsessive; ever checked if the back door is locked on your way out, even though you know it is? Same thing times ten.

 

Now, taking my cardigan and sandals off for a minute, quite simply the bloke craves attention of any kind, not in a vain way, but he has to have something that captures his attention and almost as importantly, someone to share it with. Did that make sense?

 

During Italia 90, they were playing (I think) Cameroon in the evening, trained in the morning and were ordered to rest in the afternoon. Gazza got caught playing tennis in searing heat with one of the hotel staff.

 

In short, the bloke cant sit down and chill out. I am very similar, I cant sit and watch telly, my mind has to be stimulated with something, even a book or sommat like this, anything, but its hard to switch off that 'energy' or I get proper cranky.

 

He has to be doing something. He's like a big daft kid on whizz.

 

If that something isnt football then he's goosed, goes out on the piss, and ends up like he is.

Everyone at some time will have some kind of problem where they can't think straight but quite often they dont realise it.

If you are referring to my post, I was not relating his mental illness as self inflicted, it is him not getting any help for it that is. His family appear to be there for him but he does not want help.

I do have friends with depression and folk who have family who have mental illness and cannot imagine their pain. I think it a shame though when someone is aware of their problem but still doesn't seek help for it, especially when they are able to afford the best of help. I know therapy isn't a cure but to not try and get help it seems a waste of life.

To be fair nb he has sought help, he's been in the best re-habs money can buy. It seems to me that Gazza is at rock bottom right now, unfortunately i think it will end tragically - rather than him getting better. I hope i'm wrong though.

I'm not completely heartless. I hope you are wrong too, as he was such a talent & always seemed really likeable. He seemed to want to please people so much. Any life lost early for whatever reason is a terrible waste.

Another story was when he was at Tottenham and his washing machine at home was broke (or something like that). Anyway it was preying on his mind so much that he had a shocking first half. Venables pulled him to one side to ask what was wrong. And then proceeded to arrange a plumber to go out to Gazza's house to fix it. I think Gazza was even involved on the phone to make sure it was done properly! Apparently he went on to have a cracking 2nd half. Now that's MAD! But you had to love the guy. A true genius.

 

Players like Hagi and Stoichkov get treated like gods in their own countries - I always thought we should have done the same with Gazza.
