We were beaten by a side that was above us in the league before kick-off and are currently 9th - this is not the Fulham side that so very nearly got relegated last season. We have only one game left against the top four teams. We are actually only four positions short of being in a European spot (assuming two of the top six teams reach the FA Cup final). God help us if we were having a really crap season! C'mon, Sluffy. In football terms, we ARE having a really cr*p season. We just might survive the drop, that's all.
March 15, 200917 yr That was a very poor display by Bolton yesterday. Yet it could have been so different if we had scored from Elmander's free kick in the first half. O'brien is rightly getting some stick for his part in Fulham's first two goals but nobody is mentioning McCann's bloomer for the third goal. Megson must take some responsibility for the display. He saw how bad we were in the first half yet appeared to do nothing to change things at half time. Perhaps he was swayed by the late Davies equaliser. Taylor seems reluctant to run down the wing. All too often Steinsson has the ball and Taylor is standing about three yards away from him instead of getting on his bike and haring down the wing for the pass from Steinsson. In fact standing about seems to be what a lot of our players are doing at the moment. How many times does a cross into the opposing area get cleared with nobody following up to meet the clearance. I recall Gardner getiing caught flat footed yesterday in our half when he was favourite to get the ball but took too long to get moving. And why when we have a goal kick do all the players stand around in the same place. For god's sake spread out. Two positives from yesterday. Their goals all came from defensive mistakes. OK not really a positive but cut out the mistakes and we get a clean sheet. Secondly, Mark Davies, our best player yesterday, was the only one prepared to move forward with the ball. I hope his injury is not a bad one and he will be back next Saturday.

I say Megson because O'Brien shouldn't have been on the pitch to make his 2nd mistake for the goal and McCann his, surprisingly, only mistake that led to a goal. Yes we were shite, but we can, and will perform better than that. I thought Mark played well, Cahill did well (considering he was covering for two others) and that the strikers had such woeful service that blame would be unfairly admonished. Oh and Riga's shite.

The thing is Rembrandt that you have to compare our season to how other teams are doing around us and not to how Bolton played in seasons gone by. What I mean is that I've seen Bolton in the top tier under Bill Ridding , Ian Greaves, Colin Todd, Allardyce and now Megson and it is without any doubt what-so-ever that all of the other managers have produced more attractive and entertaining teams that we have today but - and it is a massive but - the financial importance of surviving at any cost in the top tier now is imperative. It is far more essential to 'survive the drop' than to play attractive or entertaining football. It is considerably more important than to put up a good effort against the big four clubs. It is extremely more important than waste time and energy on a FA Cup game or even European Cup game. That is why there are a good ten to a dozen other clubs - all within a few points of us - all playing the same 'survival' football as we are. We are funnily enough one of the better teams playing this dire 'survive in the Premiership at all costs' football clubs - hence my quip about being on the fringe of a European place. I personally hate the Premiership for ruining football for nearly all but the big four clubs. I don't blame a single person for not renewing their season ticket or deciding not to go to the match. But like the majority on here Bolton is in the blood and I'll stick with them through thick and thin - so I can't be arsed with morons who would rather we lose simply because they can't understand that Jose Mourinho or whoever you think is the best manager in the world - would be doing broadly the same thing that Megson (and the other dozen or so Premiership managers at similar clubs to ours) is doing for the last eighteen months or so - which is to simply stay up. Football in the Premiership has changed - playing style of Premiership clubs have reflected this - unfortunately a good portion of the fans of our club have not realised that yet. If people don't like him - well that is there choice - but as it stands now the results show that Megson is as good if not better as most of his Premiership rival managers.
March 15, 200917 yr I'd be happy with trying to win the FA Cup or Carling Cup. Most of us would. But it is not worth the financial risk to the club. Not just Bolton that thinks that way either - Villa and Spurs dumped their UEFA chances to concentrate on the Premiership. Arsenal even plays its 'youth team' in the domestic cup competitions! It's the Premiership gravy train that is wrecking football as we knew it.

March 15, 200917 yr ...I don't think I'm a better fan than folk who say they'll not go till megson goes, I just go watching Bolton. Happen it's just me though with that attitude. No you're not alone there. I have the same attitude. The current divide in 'supporters' support or hatred for our current manager is irrational. I was happy to love Big Sam and criticise him everytime we lost. These days it seems you have to either slag Gary or completely absolve him. Anyone who had any input/contribution into our shambolic performance against Fulham yesterday deserves all the abuse they are getting. For the last couple of games we seem to be back to our WORST of not being able to pass and defending like we WANT to concede. We could not have made it much easier to give any team their first [ and probably only ] away win of the season. I'm happy with Cahill. I think Elmander is showing a few promising signs. I'm even happy to admit I was very wrong in that Taylor is a lot better footballer than I was prepared to give him credit for this time last season. But on the whole we have a very small and incredibly inconsistent bunch of footballers at the club at the moment and it's frustrating for those who claim to love or hate Gary Megson... cos I think it's impossible to say whether he's doing a good job or a lousy one! The team is too inconsistent!
