Blackpool seem to have a tradition of managers going onto bigger and better things

Allardyce, Megson, Worthington and Grayson to name a few

Looks like Steve Thompson could be the next Blackpool manager.

Blackpool caretaker manager Tony Parkes has left the Championship club after a meeting with chairman Karl Oyston.

The 50-year-old former serial Blackburn caretaker took over at the Seasiders in December and helped to steer them away from the relegation zone.

"He wanted to spend more time with his family and have a break from football," Oyston told the club website.

The Tangerines are now interviewing for a new boss, with coach Steve Thompson believed to be a strong candidate.

Parkes and Thompson took over at Bloomfield Road at the end of last year following Simon Grayson's departure to Leeds and guided them to safety with an impressive string of results.

If he hadnt played at such an inept time for BWFC, he probably be held in much higher esteem. Played over 400 games for the club

But then again he was overshadowed by Joyce. Easy to see why we got rid of the terrible Redfearn.

When he left, he was our best player by a long way. He moved up the ladder to Luton, who are now a non-league club. It's a fucked up world.

Wasn't his nickname the passmaster or have i just made that up?

Thats true, but he did'nt stay at Luton long because they signed a very good coloured player (forgot his name) so Steve Thompson moved on, to where I can't remember.

When he left Bolton he was playing very well though.

Became a victim of the boo-boys at the end - stayed with us too long I reckon

At the level we were playing at he was a fine footballer

Probably my first BWFC hero

Leicester City. I'm sure he scored a penalty at Wembley to get them into the Prem/Div 1

He played in one of those ridiculous play-off finals you used to get - sure it was 4-3 or something similar

Didn't he only play 1 game or something daft by Luton? The manager who signed him left and then he followed very quickly. Or summat like that

remember his free kick at Gay Meadow

Always a good footballer and excellent passer. Remember seeing his debut at home in about 1983? He was playing on the right wing in front of Brian Borrows and looked very nervous when he received the ball. Unfortunately he was not helped by playing in some very poor Bolton teams in the mid 80's.

A fine exponent of the cross-field pass was Thommo and a shining light in a great big pile of stinking, rotting footballer vegetable types.

Don't ever remember him becoming a target for the boo-boys though - not whilst Jules was doing his stuff alongside him (or, infact, not actually doing anything but displaying a very tidy 80s tache and, generally, hiding - even succeeding in this when it came to Cretinhead Neal making his substitutions)

Yeah Good move getting rid of Redfearn at 18 years old, he was so out of his depth in that quality squad of 83/84,

he would never make anything of himself

A favourite on here is Mr Redfearn: 15 clubs and nearly 1000 appearances in a 22 year career.

Anyhow, here is Tomo 0,,10432~4257214,00.jpg

Don't get Barney started on that subject...

I gave him a clap last Saturday when he did the GG draw. He had a belting shot - I recall a pearler against Preston at home.

We had a reasonable outfit in the 80's for division 3 and 4. Great childhood memories of going to Wembley twice. Bristol City were a good team mind u.

Absolutely, one of my first and abiding memories of Burnden is him plonking a 60 yard ball from the terrace side over to the supermarket corner

He was a cut above the motley crew around him, he really was

Didn't Tomo score a vital penalty in one of the semi finals / northern finals - ironically against Blackpool?

I,m sure David Pleat was really pleased to sign him but in a tv interview pleat expressed how a week later he signed Ricky Hill or someone who was a much better player so tommo had to be sold..

I always remember he liked to strike a good free kick around the edge of the box.

Looking at his picture he's not changed much either, how old will he be now?

Scott Oakes moved from Leicester to Luton around then,i think he was part of the Thompson deal.

Luton also signed Chris Kamara from Leeds shortly after Thompson was sold

He was about 3 cuts above the motley crew around him. He gave us a few seasons, but he had to go - he was wasted with us at that time.

Was it Tomo who got sent off for a second booking against the pie munchers, a couple of years later, after he'd retired the ref admitted that he'd mis-read his notes and it was the Wigan number 8 who he'd booked already.

He stood out a mile during his time at Bolton, a man amongst boys, don't think many bore him a grudge when he moved on to "better" things.

100% bang on that :good:

as for thompson he went somewhere and was shipped on sharpish because

whoever bought him didn't want him

they wanted somebody else

whoever had the somebody else wanted thompson

deal quickly done

clubs were leicester and luton

redfearn was twice the player thompson was and joyce was just shite

nearly as big a tosspot as brown

Steve Thompson is on the short list for the managers job at Blackpool but word around here is that Alan Knill from Bury is nailed on.

Steve Thompson

He has enjoyed a whirlwind rise up the coaching ranks, following a successful playing career.

A cultured and intelligent midfielder, 44-year-old Thompson made more than 400 appearances in a nine-year stay at Bolton, before successful spells at Leicester (where he met and played alongside Simon Grayson) and Rotherham.

He arrived at Blackpool as Centre of Excellence boss before becoming head of youth in 2005.

Some serious good work caught the eye of Simon Grayson, who made Thompson his number three the following summer.

Since then Pool have enjoyed non-stop success, winning promotion and establishing themselves as a solid Championship club.

He is respected by the players, who enjoy the training sessions he puts on, and is the choice of many who believe continuity would be good for the Seasiders.

Thompson lives in Blackpool and considers himself a local lad, even though he was actually born in Oldham.

A popular figure among supporters, he views this as the ideal chance for him to show what he can do as a manager. Remains friendly with Grayson and the pair went golfing together recently.
