Pre-season

Featured Replies

So with the majority of the pre season out the way, how do we determine weather the pre season has been a good work out or not, I have not had chance to attend any games as yet so I cannot comment on how we are set up to start the season. Have the opposition we have played against been adequate enough?

Based on past seasons, a bad pre-season often leads to a good start to the season proper. I think I recall the summer of 2001 was a disaster but we began with the thumping win at Leicester and spent 29 days at the top of the table that season!

I suppose this pre-season has been OK, so i'll settle for an OK start to the season proper.

i think its gone ok. if you think about it megson has got most of his signings in early and taken a full part of the pre-season tour. another bonus is that all the games we have played have been away from home and we have not been defeated. hopefully that reflects a better away form for this season too. sean davis seems o have settled into the midfield well and elmander, although not scoring, has been involved with a few of our goals in pre-season so far.

as long as we start off well against sunderland then thats the main point. it might not be too bad a time to play them as well as they have no craig gordon in goal and have a few defensive probs (paul mcshane injured and paulo da silva not work permit)

I seem to recall shite pre-seasons end up with us having decent seasons....im sure we went on a tour of Ireland once, and it didnt go to well. We got beat off Waterford i believe and drew with Bray...but im sure it was the season we got promoted back to the premiership

Did we not have ties with an Irish club when BSA was in charge?

pre-season results mean nothing really. I would say we have been successful in the fact that al the players have had a run out, and we haven't picked up any injuries beofre the season proper starts

But we did have Cohen sent off who will be suspended for the start of the season.

He would only have been keeping the bench warm anyway :pardon:

i think we were very successful in preseason

Went today and thought that Ricketts looked pretty good especially going forward, where I would say he was better than Steinsson. Zat Knight won everything in the air and we looked quite solid at the back. However, Elmander has totally lost any sembleance of threat in his play. He doesn't shoot when it opens up for him and on the two occasions that he did actually shoot, they were tame backpass efforts. Before the game Elmo and Davies were shooting at Al Habsi's goal, Davies was hammering them in but Elmander was tapping them and I didn't see him hit the back of the net even in practice, very worrying he looked short of confidence and any real goal threat. I have been really patient with Elmo so far but what I saw today was very concerning, anyone else notice this?

Yes me - he is hopeless.

Its almost as though he needs to go on loan to a lower league club to score a few and get a bit of confidence.

He's a workhorse - thats all. He will being played every week because of his price tag.

And for those who praise Megson for his signings then this guy cost more than the rest put together.

That's being kind to him,i don't see a higher level of work rate from him than many other strikers.

When he got the ball 30 yards from goal in the second half, had time to run and shoot, his effort on goal was embarrassing,a tame back pass. The fee we paid for someone of his limited ability is amazing.

The thing is i've never seen anything from him in a Bolton shirt to suggest he's a Premier League player. He doesn't have enough ability. It's not about confidence, its a lack of talent.

you can forget about results as far as measuring how pre-season has gone. win, lose or draw it does not matter - glorified training sessions that's all the are. all that i can say about this pre-season is that we seem to have strengthened the squad well.

That's not strictly true is it?

Not thaty I rate Elmander

Gardner had a good game today,as did there goalie.

Sunderland will get twatted next week :good:

i agree.

Hope so!!!

Ricketts looked really good. He could perhaps play right midfield by the looks of it.

Elmander's confidence is shot. It's a real problem. He is literally the worst player in the team, the weak link. Yet he's the most expensive and is in a vital position.
