National Anthem

Featured Replies

I've always thought our National Anthem was too short when only 1 verse is sung at different events, on Sunday at the cenotaph we sang 2 verses, 1 & 3. Which would be your preferred choices

1. God save our gracious Queen

Long live our noble Queen

God save the Queen

Send her victorious

Happy and glorious

Long to reign over us

God save the Queen

2. O Lord our God arise

Scatter her enemies

And make them fall

Confound their politics

Frustrate their knavish tricks

On Thee our hopes we fix

God save us all

3. Thy choicest gifts in store

On her be pleased to pour

Long may she reign

May she defend our laws

And ever give us cause

To sing with heart and voice

God save the Queen

4. Not in this land alone

But be God's mercies known

From shore to shore

Lord make the nations see

That men should brothers be

And form one family

The wide world over

5. From every latent foe

From the assassins blow

God save the Queen

O'er her thine arm extend

For Britain's sake defend

Our mother, prince, and friend

God save the Queen

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade

May by thy mighty aid

Victory bring

May he sedition hush

And like a torrent rush

Rebellious Scots to crush

God save the King

As English as I am, if they ever played all 6 versus at a game I'd be asleep

None of the above, 'Jerusalem' ,words by William Blake should be our English National Anthem.

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountain green?

And was the holy Lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here

Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Bring me my arrows of desire!

Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,

Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,

Till we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land.

Lots of sexual imagery for you perverts / English Lit students!

Jedward should do it at the weekend.

He's right.

He's right.

Sounds too much like a hymn. We need something more rousing and contemporary, something that says this is England, something decked out in Burberry ready for a Saturday night on the town, something like......... Tubthumping by Chumbawamba.

Yes, toothless inbred Dingles.

Sorry Wiggum and No Balls but its God Save The Queen for me. Our national anthem gets sung numerous times at every England match and the armed forces love it. Never break with tradition and God Save Our Queen =D>

I'm patriotic but the national anthem means nothing to me. Have never sung it and never will, no time for the monarchy.

So as opposed to 'Queen and Country' yours would be 'country'

Yes

..and the freedom to make that decision can be, in some part, credited to the democratic system a constitutional monarch helps to maintain =@

I have no issue with people who feel passionate about the monarchy and love the national anthem, just not for me.

Nor me with you mate. Live and let live.

I happen to believe that the Royal Family is a net earner for the country and that constitutional monarchy has proved to be an excellent system. Dread republics because a president can never be apolitical. Almost always a politically motivated appointment. No thanks. GSTQ.
