theres been a van abandoned on our pub car park for nearly two months now.

having contacted the local police station,they say the van hasnt been stolen,the owner cant be traced and its up to us to dispose of the van.absoloutly ridiculous.

now the said van is a 53 plate,and looks to be ok condition,so in my logical opinion,if someone dumps a perfectly good van on your property and the law wont shift it,surley i could aquire the van for myself? i very much doubt this could happen,but why the hell not!

According to this http://moss.bolton.gov.uk/website/pages/Abandonedvehicles.aspx?bid=147 abandoned vehicles should be shifted after 48hrs.

you wont be able to insure it because you arent the registered owner. and i wouldnt be surprised if you have to pay to get it shifted. wait until the pikies go on queens park again , one of them will take it off your hands.

Once you "Claim" the Van, someone could then report it Stolen, and you will be the one in position of a Stolen Vehicle.

 

Sounds to me like someone wants it to be taken, so they can then make a claim.

the council have been informed,but they unwilling to move it because its on a comercial property.theres all kinds of red tape involved.its the same an un taxed vehicle,they cant touch it if its a private car park.find the whole thing crazy.

im beginning to think jayjay's idea is best,be some entertainment for the locals anyway!

was thinkng of breaking in and making it into bit of a retreat from the wife! few extension leads,little beer fridge and a telly,bobs your uncle!

Its not the one on the lion of viennas carpark is it? If it is then it belongs to some cnut that keeps fly tipping near my mates flat on royal park grove (the flats where the old hospital used to be)

 

Break into it, push it onto the road, councils problem, might as well do something for all that tax you pay. Or take it to a scrappers, for a 53 plate it could earn a few quid for scrap and parts

I'd tend to agree with Danny, apply to the DVLA for the logbook.

 

If the registered keeper cannot be traced after 30 days, you can legally apply for a V5 in your own name.

 

Really, it's like finding something in the street then taking it to the police station as lost property. If it's not claimed within 30 days then the item is yours. So long as you tell the plod and DVLA then there's no issue over 'theft by finding'

 

If you do get the logbook you can get some replacement keys made up from Gordons then flog the bugger. If it's in decent nick and only 7 years old you should get a couple of grand for it or more.

 

Or get a wheel clamp!

Just remember though that the registered keeper ie name on the log book doesn't mean they actually own it so if the police say it doesn't have a current keeper it's still not technically not owned.

Get it clamped. You can bet the real owner will notice and come and ask in the pub why it's now immobile.

 

Charge him ?10 per day for the parking or say you'll inform the police that you have done what they couldn't do in finding out who the owner is.

 

Don't set it on fire, it may still end up your responsibility to move it and, let's face it, a burnt out van on your car park isn't really going to attract new customers.

 

There is a hotline we use at work to get the council to shift abandoned vehicles and to reoport fly tipping. PM me the details: Where, since when, model, reg, etc and I'll see what they say for you.

Have you checked to see if theres any finance outstanding on it?
