How much do you think, in total, UK companies and individuals are "avoiding"?

Couldn't give you an exact figure, i don't think anyone could. Some are playing by the rules whereas some are avioding hundreds of millions.. Vodafone, Topshop, BHS & Boots to name some of the worst. I imagine the overall figure is billions.

So, marginal compared to the deficit?

BTW; are you so sure that they are avoiding rather than legally mitigating?

Generally, do you feel that taxes are too low in this country?

You missed my first point though, I see.

Your use of the word avoiding makes it sound as if they are some sort of corrupt organisiation. They are in fact organisiastions who actually provide employment for thousands of people. People who pay taxes that go to pay for public services. They sell goods and services that incure VAT that also goes to fund public services.

Their profits are also taxed etc. etc.

I imagine your 'guess' of billions is pure fiction.

It didn't make much sense. I never said how much you earn has anything to do with how much education you've had

It made sense as in people can leave school at 16 and have very successful careers.

You intimated that parents who don't care don't push their children into post 16 education. His parents cared too.

Generalising in such a manner, is that not a bit prejudicial?

There was an urban myth that vodafone owed an excess of 6 billion in tax, this was fictional but the figure negotiated with HMRC was 1.25 billion. This is vodafone allowed. Sir Phillip Green is known for avoiding hundreds of millions, if you include a few other tycoons i think the number definitely creeps into the billions.

& I agree plenty of comapanies offer good services and jobs. But there are certain organisations who are corrupt who governments have protected for to long. Some of the treatment of workers by certain companies here and even worse abroad is also questionable and needs to be stopped. Whether or not they provide a tasty Big Mac is irrelevent.

Im quite aware people leave home at 16 and achieve succes, i know such people & i never said their parents didn't care for them.

I was simply stating how your culture, environment & parents can on the whole effect what you end up doing with yourself & your personality. Not quite sure how that is prejudical...

The budget deficit is around a trillion, so of course its marginal to that. We never seem to technically get out of debt, thats one of the natures of capitalism.

Aye some are mitigating, but i still feel is immoral in large amounts and needs to capped in some circumstances. I do know that vodafone and Phillip Green owe large amounts in Tax avoidance. Vodafone had to agree a debt of around 1.25 billion with HMRC regarding tax avoidance.

No i don't feel taxes are too low.

And so we go back to the unfortunate position our society finds itself in where it's someone else's fault.

University for all doesn't appear to be working, in that it merely devalues the degree system. It isn't for everyone & those who leave school at 16 may well be no less educated in many ways than those who stay in education till they are 21. You are generalising. That's prejudicial.

I thought the police approach was that they would film the knobheads smashing up Oxford Street. Then arrest them at a later date away from the cameras where they could be free to give them a kicking at their leisure. I don't agree with it but the media where creaming their pants hoping to see some police brutality so there hands where tied..

Tax avoidance isn't quite the same as tax evasion though is it?

Some would argue it's clever accounting.

Jeese where did u get all this from. You've formulated some sort of criticism out of nothing :nea: Can you give me any quotes which claim i feel those who go to uni are more educated than those who don't??? I've a mix of match of mates from all backgrounds and cultures etc & i never judge anyones intelligence based on any of latter. I believe people are free to choose either way and should be supported which ever path they take. I never said otherwise so stop making crap up please

All i said is that what happens in your life isn't all about yourself, it is to a certain extent but so many things can happen which can shape you that are out of your control. Eg- Wars, natural disasters, Insane dictators, redundancy... the list goes on and on and its just common sense. Some things, (not all things) that happen if your life are out of your control and its part of the uncertainty of the world we live in. End of

Either you worded this really badly or this very much gives the impression that those who leave school at 16 have not had the same chances as those who stay on in education. As you said, it's about choice.

If you are told from an early age to do your best at school, go into higher education then that is what you are likely to do. On the other hand if your parents don't care about education you are likely to leave school at 16 or 18. So much of who you are is embedded in yer before you even have a chance to think for yourself. Which is why it is important to give everybody an equal chance.

For what it's worth, I don't disagree that there's plenty of shit parents out there, but it cannot be used as an excuse for not making something of oneself.

So, Mr B White

Everything is all wrong in your life, it's not your fault, the government should make it better, but there's not enough tax to go around, which is only a few billion due to to avoidance/evasion, of spunked away trillions.

Does that summarise it?

Assuming that we can't bail out your life, how might you improve it?

I just don't think it gives that impression. All it says is that whether you stay on in education or not can often depend on the values of your parents and culture. Some of it is about your choice depending on the power of values. But i guess its besides the point now, you know i don't feel that way, as i said whatever anyone chooses to do regarding higher education is fine, they should be supported either way and neither is a sign of higher intelligence.

True to some extent.. But if a kid is abused you expect to be able to deal with that and become successfull?? If a kids is abandoned you expect them to deal with that become successful?? If a kid is sent to fight some phoney war you expect them to deal with that and make something of themselves?? the list could go on...

You'd be amazed how many successful people have been brought up in childrens homes or put up for adoption etc.

& one man's "phoney" war is another man's fight for freedom.

I hate to sound like Jeremy Kyle, but in this country people appear to get more help from sitting on their arses and moaning than standing up and saying they're not a victim and taking assertive action in their lives.

Shit happens in so many peoples livs in so many different ways. It's how they dealt with that makes the man.

I can't disagree with much of that :)

Although there are countless wars which with a little negoiating amongst patriotic leaders could have saved millions of young lads and lasses. ww1 could of been brought to end years before. I'm not putting down the lads who fought, it just makes me sad that their lives were disregarded by so many leaders & general. By the end of it no-one seemed to know what anyone was fighting for.

& nah you don't sound like jezza, its a fair point. Most the people on that shite programme have hardly been the victims of catastrophie tho. As u say, shit happens and i've a hell of a lot of respect for people to stand up and deal with it, i do however have have a lot of sympathy and understanding for those who struggle to deal with horrible circumstances & i don't reckon their any less of a person for struggling.

I hope this thread isn't the future of WW, it's flaming hard work :dribble:

Right i must admit i don't really have the time to carry on in this thread. I didn't expect anyone on this forum to agree with us but its always beneficial to hear two sides to an opinion though ey.

I did also have one last point to make before i got caught up in various debates...

Everyone here seems to be viciousy critical of the actions of the anarchists on saturday, & i see some of your points, i ain't supporting them but i was in London and saw hundreds of thousands protesting peacefully, within their rights, for a good cause. Don't disregard that.

Finally i do feel you should stand up to some of your own misfits before you criticise others. I used to follow Bolton everywhere as a lad and ended up getting in with some of the wrong lads. Not one of the highlights of my adolescent years :nea:

One day at blackburn away i remember outside a pub near ewood marching to the ground with around a hundred of us. About half of those chanting "your just a town full of pakis," i remember the look on a young asian bloke taking his lad and las to the game, its stuck with me always. I've also seen similar bunches of lads running around the streets of towns and cities under EDL banners making racial barriers and integration ten times worse than they already are. I saw the EDL in Manchester and saw loads of lads and elders i recognized from my trips to the games and away from the stadiums. There fucking things up royally and i reckon you should stand up to these lads before you critise a few young anarchists smashing up HSBC.

I hope everyone has a crackin day out at Wembley (hopefully two!) :drinks:

Were there not millions?

Were there not millions?

300,000- 500,000 seems the most common estimate.
