Puzzle

Someones just put this on facebook and it's annoying me now...

A boy wants a top for ?97.00 so he borrows ?50.00 of his mum and ?50.00 off his dad then buys the top. He then gets ?3.00 change. Gives ?1.00 his mum back , ?1.00 his dad back and ?1.00 for his self. Then he owes both ?49.00. 49+49=98 plus his ?1.00 =?99.00 so wheres the other pound gone?

Its gunna be something really obvious

Do yourself a favour buddy and accept that there is no answer / trick ...

It shows how times has changed though as it used to be 3 blokes have a meal that costs ?25, they each put a tenner in. The waiter comes back with the ?5 change and they agree to give him a ?2 tip. So .... They each get ?1 back. That means they pay ?9 each and he got ?2 so where is the other pound ....

Mmmm. So he gives his parents an extra 50p each they still only get ?49.50 each (if you follow the original logic ...) so ?99.00. who got the other pound? The waiter in the other totally unrelated story?

Anyway, I reckon Marc Wright is gonna win

Borrows ?50 of dad - owe's him ?1.50p change.

Borrows ?50 of mum - owe's her ?1.50p change.

Change received =?3.00

Pays dad ?1.00 thus owes him 50p

Pays mum ?1.00 thus owes her 50p

50p + 50p = ?1.00 - the boy pockets the ?1 instead.

Everything balances.

What can't you understand about the question?

Well Mr Einstein, you have answered a question that was not actually asked. Save yourself some typing (I and presumably you both know that it iis a puzzle based on the way that the question is framed - it just poor form to change the rules part way through ...)

he owes ?98

Has has ?1 and a shirt worth ?97.

i was right!!

Well, we could be on for a double this season with the dancing .... I better stop there as I am worrying myself ...

dont worry my friend.you are an uneducated form of plankton.just like me. ;)

The actual answer is he pays fuck all back, and sulks when his parents ask for it.

97 quid for a "top"? Fucking ponce

See the trick with this 'puzzle' is that the direction of the money (ie. parents to kid, or kid to parents) is flipped around subtly.

As someone said, he owes 98 quid to his parents (49 each), has a top for 97 and a quid in changes.

97 + 1 = 98 ... this balances

98 + 1 = 99 ... this makes it look like money has gone missing

It's all about presenting the figures in a certain way. Like the way a lot of people present facts to back up their opinion in online arguments...

You add an asset to a liability to create a false imbalance in the story.

98 is what he owes, not what he has.

Boy starts with 0, borrows 100, buys a 97 asset, retains 1 cash and pays off 2 of his asset. Net position, 98 asset, 98 liability.

Parent lends 50, receives 1 back, still owed 49.

Basically the 'puzzle' is caused by adding 2 numbers together in a way that is meaningless. Rather like most problems of philosophy are caused by using words in a way that has no actual relationship with reality.

I wouldn't have lent him the ?50, maths problem averted.
