January 15, 201214 yr You cannot on the one hand say that a conflict should not be taking place and then claim that politicians should be sending their own sons and daughters, by inference suggesting that more troops would be better. Simply not serious. You are just twisting my words trying to look like billy big brains now arent you? You know my theory was right. But that would detract from a magnigicent British win over one of the finest ever assembled armies that we had ever come up against.
January 15, 201214 yr It is not a matter of 'we,' but of 'they,' they being the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands who were spared miserable lives under a military dictatorship. It would be an enduring source of national shame if we could not have acted to avoid that eventuality.

But that would detract from a magnigicent British win over one of the finest ever assembled armies that we had ever come up against. By the very definition of the word a 'theory' cannot be 'right,' so given your deficiencies in this area I am not in the least bit surprised that you do not understand what I am saying. You stated quite clearly that if Thatcher wanted war, she should have been prepared to send her own son. By inference, therefore, you would have been in favour of the war if she had sent him. You ought to get yourself some stronger principles if your views can be swayed by one extra individual being sent to war. Edited January 15, 201214 yr by Maggie Tate

It would be an enduring source of national shame if we could not have acted to avoid that eventuality. But if we gave the Falklands to the Argies then the locals would have been offered a life over here would they not? Simples.

You ought to get yourself some stronger principles if your views can be swayed by one extra individual being sent to war. How the hell am I in favour of a war if I say she should of sent her own son? Besides, this was not my original point. What point of her wanting this war do you not agree with?
January 15, 201214 yr Why the fucking hell should they leave their homes? So you think in order to save a few local inhabitants, we should send the in the army? Do you feel that much for their lives?
January 15, 201214 yr So you think in order to save a few local inhabitants, we should send the in the army? Do you feel that much for their lives? When we start picking which citizens' safety is more worthy than others, I think our society is close to folding,
January 15, 201214 yr When we start picking which citizens' safety is more worthy than others, I think our society is close to folding, But these people werent going to be slaughtered. The British government could of said, 'look, we cant afford to lose servicemen so you can keep your homes so why not come and live here in the UK? As I have said, this war was more about the popularity of Maggie Thatcher.
January 15, 201214 yr But these people werent going to be slaughtered. The British government could of said, 'look, we cant afford to lose servicemen so you can keep your homes so why not come and live here in the UK? As I have said, this war was more about the popularity of Maggie Thatcher. I'm sure thy didnt know they were going to lose servicemen. Why should they come back to the UK? I believe partly that peoples' hatred of Thatcher clouds their judgement and partly she was on a huge ego trip. I also believe we were right to not let them have it just because they decided they wanted it back one day.
January 15, 201214 yr So you think in order to save a few local inhabitants, we should send the in the army? Do you feel that much for their lives? I feel a great deal for people who live quite happily and are suddenly threatened by dictatorship and totalitarianism. Our foreign policy should hinge on helping such people wherever they are in the world. And in the case of the Falkland Islands, there were our own people, which only added to our obligation to get involved. I share with you the trait of not being a historian of the Falklands conflict and have no real argument either way on whether or not this was a war waged on the basis of Thatcher's 'wanting one,' as you keep saying. My view is limited to the understanding that if all other possibilities which incorporated not giving the Argentines an inch had been exhausted, then war to protect British citizens from totalitarianism was patently the only option. You just gave me the opportunity to comment on the 'well if it was her son...' argument, which is one made all the time by anti-war sorts and one I have never understood. You responded by explaining that the thing to do would have been to remove the actual inhabitants from the equation allow the troops of the Argentine dictatorship to take territory unopposed. In your crazy world, a war is a war and anyone fighting one is as bad as anyone else.
January 15, 201214 yr totally not my argument...but i thought the only we reason we fucked about with the falklands was because it is the nearest bit of land to the ridiculously oil rich part of the earth underneath the melting antartic ice cap?
January 15, 201214 yr Sir Francis... I'm surprised you didn't throw the oil rights in the antarctic into the hat... the Falklands maintain our interest there that's the usual argument But that had nothing to do with fighting tooth and nail for your sovereignty over an invading country for British naationals... that's what we fought for. Be it a couple of thousand sheep farmers in the Falklands or a few million people in Northern Ireland, you have to fight for your own!

January 16, 201214 yr Anyone who lets young men die to gain votes is a prick in my eyes. They could have avoided that war but she used it to gain more power instead. But the thing that gets me most is stealing milk off little children
January 16, 201214 yr Anyone who lets young men die to gain votes is a prick in my eyes. They could have avoided that war but she used it to gain more power instead. But the thing that gets me most is stealing milk off little children I fuckin hate drinking milk and was force fed it until the age of 8 at shool. In the winter the top was frozen and we had to break it with a pencil before drinking it... In the summer it was luke warm and nasty.... really nasty. it wasn't the semi skimmed stuff you get now, it was full fat clog the arteries stuff. Disgusting and child abuse That was the best thing Thatcher ever did!!
January 16, 201214 yr You my friend are a warmonger. Theres a chance if we had bolstered our defences then the Falklands war might not have been. If theres a chance war can be avoided, then Im all for it. Have you got a bit of yank in you? As for British territory, how if it was your son who had died for a piece of land that no fucker over here cares about? How are we better off for having the Falklands? Good God Francis. Wherever do you pull this shit from? Firstly, have you any idea of the mineral wealth that lies around the Falklands and South Georgia? I am sure that some of our oil & gas experts on here will oblige you (notwithstanding the fact that we probably don't have the technology to harvest it yet ). One day, it will be seriously valuable to us so that answers your preposterous questions about 'piece of land that no fcuker even cares about' and 'how are we better off owning the Falklands'. Beyond all of that, however, the Falklands is British Territory inhabited by people who unanimously want to remain part of Britain - that in itself is enough reason to defend our turf as we did. A warmonger? Bit of yank? Rarely have I jousted with one so dim. Going back to your earlier mad utterances about 'only taking on the Argies because we knew we'd win' etc. please go and read up on British military history. I suppose we knew we'd defeat Nazi Germany or the Spanish Armada etc.? Sticking with the Falklands, see if you can wrap your seemingly limited grey matter around this. Argentina was fighting close to its own coastline with fairly simple supply line issues and bags of reinforcements not far away. The British Task Force had a mountain to climb in logisitical terms and yet emerged victorious. Makes one proud. As far as my son is concerned, had he elected to join the British armed forces, it would have been completely his choice and I would have supported him in that decision. No son should die before his father but, unfortunately, being in the military increses this risk massively. All the more reason in my eyes to be full of admiration for our excellent army, navy and air force who, I believe, have the undying gratitude of most of our fellow countrymen.

The great thing about WWays is that (most of the time) we can freely discuss our differences and still remember the key things which bind us. I'd be at the opposite end of the (sensible) political scale (Conservative to Labour and all points in between) to the likes of jazza, mick brown, crawley etc. but respect their right to have the views they have and be more than happy to sup a few pints with them any day of the week. Enjoy the banter with all of them. I really don't get Sir Francis' views on this one but I'd even have a pint or two with him. All Bolton fans are 51% good as a minimum.
January 16, 201214 yr But the thing that gets me most is stealing milk off little children you should ask your history teacher to put you right on that one later today
January 16, 201214 yr Besides oil and wanting to whip the Argies, isn't the Falklands seen as a safe haven staging post for all things around South Atlantic, should we or our Allies require it one day?

January 16, 201214 yr Besides oil and wanting to whip the Argies, isn't the Falklands seen as a safe haven staging post for all things around South Atlantic, should we or our Allies require it one day? Another very good point. A good strategic position as is Gib. Another thing Peacenik Francis overlooks is that if we had done fook all, how many other British outposts might have been invaded? It would have been open slather. Spaniards into Gib, God knows who invading others of the fourteen UK Overseas Territories like Bermuda, Virgin Islands,Cayman Islands or Montserrat? A stand had to be made.
