Well you only have to divert your attention for 10 seconds. For journalists, there is very little action to report so they can focus on filling out their copy with nonsense. I was disappionted, to say the least, that the final event of the decathlon was not shown live. Instead they pretended it was live while showing it several minutes later. The runners could be seen racing in the background during one of the post-event interviews. God knows Fastest man on the planet? Highest proportion of drug cheats? At least drug cheats stand a chance of being caught out in athletics, which led the way in testing. Football has well known clubs who connive with players to avoid tests without any sanction - or even criticism.

Cracking race too; she's matched Cathy Freeman as the most successful ever now, medals wise. CO has never failed a drugs test. She served a suspension for having missed 3 tests in an 18 month period. All international standard athletes are required to give a time of day and a place where they will be, for each day. [Nowadays they can amend by text, etc, simply giving an hour's notice]. Most athletes give 8am at home, but since she has 6 younger siblings she gave 6pm at training venues so as not to disrupt the bathroom queue, and failed to keep up-to-date with notifying changes. She was embarrassed by the first missed test, and only sought help when a second had been missed. This was in the early days of such arrangements, and the support given is better now, and the athletes understand the position, too. The PFA has resisted the introduction of such strict rules, citing freedom of the individual, etc., when it is actually easier to arrange on a club by club basis. A club could say all our players will be at our training ground at 11am each day, except for those notified separately with an alternative place by 9am on the day. Administratively it is workable but for unknown reasons it is avoided.
August 12, 201313 yr I'm sure she's got a great excuse, but given the standard rate of testing, and the low half life (/0 half life for transfusions given Athletics lack of a hemocrit limit) of most things she could conceivably take, missing 3 tests in a row is a complete free pass for doping all year long. There's nothing outstanding in her times to suggest she is, but if you're going to take irrational unreasonable positions on doping, which seems to be the PR stance of British Athletics, then you have to punish 3 missed tests as if you're doping. --------- Always amazes me how otherwise non brain-dead people can come out in favour of lifetime bans - the only end result of those is a series of bizzare crap excuses and lengthy pointless legal battles. Just make it a 4 year ban, with 2 year bans for anyone who makes a full confession within 2 weeks of the announced failure and you'll save so much bother. Edited August 12, 201313 yr by maaarsh

"Standard rate of testing" is irrelevant. Those who arouse suspicion (in the independent testers) by missing a test are far more likely to be retested. There was a previous white British gold medallist who served a 3 month ban for being uncontactable in the USA for a lengthy period, but that was kept very quiet (there is an allusion to it in the autobiography).

August 13, 201313 yr really? you could argue a case for Sally Gunnell. Olympic and World Champion. Broke the world record too when winning the Worlds you could also argue I suppose Paula Radcliffe, but that boils down to titles or being the best. August 13, 201313 yr After the BBC's gaffes I am interested to see what happens tonight. Yesterday they began the day by saying KJT would be in heat 3 in the Heptathlon hurdles races. But she was in heat 4. Jonathan Edwards explained this away as "Russian jiggery-pokery" but actually the IAAF website had always had her down for heat 4. There were 33 entries, and she was the 9th ranked on times achieved. The heats were arranged for 8, 8, 8 and 9, going from slowest to fastest. Brendan Foster remarked on Mo Farah always winning on Saturdays, citing the Olympic 10k, the Olympic 5k and the World 10k, and then said "Thank goodness the 5k is on Saturday!". No, Brendan, that's the women's final - the men's is on Friday! After legal pbs in the long jump and javelin this morning KJT is lying 5th, but the 6th placed German is only 6 points behind her (a third of a second over 800m). If KJT and the German (Rath) can beat the Dutch sprinter (Schippers) and the French star (Nana D) by 3 seconds then the bronze medal will be between. The Ukrainian leader needs only to finish within 4 seconds of the Canadian (Mrs Eaton) to win - provided that Eaton is in reasonable contention in the race, which she should be. The Dutch girl, in particular, may be able to run fast with a medal at stake. There is just a possibility that the Dutch and French athletes will run a private race for the bronze medal. In the unlikely event that the Canadian settles for siver, rather than risking any medal in a bid to take gold, the Ukrainian may be tempted to focus on her. This would allow the possibility of Rath setting a fast pace (62.5 seconds) with KJT chasing her. If Rath and KJT finish together in 2:08ish, with the Canadian in 2:15, the Ukranian in 2:16, and the Dutch and French behind the Canadian then KJT would finish second, or maybe third. But the chances are that the BBC will pick up little if any of the nuances. Alternatively they may think KJT moves up to third, overlooking the German starting just behind her who might overtake her.
