Wifi Boosters

Anybody had the need for one? Any suggestions? Want to maximise the strength of our Wifi signal throughout the house. Just wondering if there are any devices out there that mirror/rebound the signal so its full strength (or near as) in all corners of the house.

I had a Belkin one, you just put it next to the router and press a button to configure it. Cost about £20.

It didn't do what I wanted, boost the signal from Starbucks to my desk, but they'd blocked that. Otherwise it's simple technology.

Fucking hell, how fast is your internet link?

Just looked at that. 150Mbps or 300?

Fuck knows, I'm an IT spaz.  I'd imagine 300 mbps would be the better option, but you pay more for that.

I don't know a lot about it, and don't need one, but....

As my internet is 60Mb, surely there would be no point in me getting a 300Mbps device - it might be able to transmit at that speed, but if it's only getting 60Mb, then it'll only transmit 60Mb - so therefore I would probably go for the 150Mpbs device

Having said that.....I'm an IT spaz as well and have probably got that all wrong. I'm sure Carlos will be along shortly to clear the matter up

That's what I was eluding to earlier.

I'm looking at getting an extender rather than a booster. Those homeplug efforts but one spews out wifi. Stick that in the plug furthest from the router and there'll be no deadspots

This sort of thing

Hmmmm, I read about those as well. Basically I want to be able to watch my WIFI TV 2 floors up from the router and want the signal to be at a max strength possible.

So, the discussion is now EXTENDER vs BOOSTER.

I've got a d-link with wifi. Plugs into the wall upstairs. Works fine for browsing, streaming etc

What type of router do you have? We went from a type 'g' to a type 'n' and this helped us no end.

Now that's a good question. It was the one Sky gave us! So dunno really. Guess I need to start there then. Never felt it was that great, even in a small 2up-2down property.

Ours is a SKY one. The old one (SKY G type) stopped working and had a burning smell. We rang up and threatened to leave and got the N type as a free replacement. Apparently it comes recommended by Which. Looking at the SKY web site, its a different one now.

I have both.

We have an extender, bought off ebay for about 20 quid.  Took a bit of fucking about setting it up, couldn't use the pc the modem was plugged into but once we fettled it, it works quite well.

The other type we have is because the Xbox struggled to stream HD films.  Its one of those that sends the signal through the electrical wiring.  Plug ethernet into it and into the modem and whack it in a socket.  Plug the other one into a socket where you want the internet and plug an ethernet cable from that into the device you want to connect up.  Fast as fuck, no Wifi issues and no setting up.

I've got one of those, piece of piss to set up and fast as fuckery

Mrs did some product testing for the sky booster. Absolutely pointless when our flat was as small as it was. She had to send it back to get paid.

Need to apply for another now we've moved house but won't let me until the broadband is live. Fuckers!

Unless you've bought a mansion, I doubt you'll need it.

It's free so I'm having it!

Indeed.  My phone picks up my wifi right to the end of my road.
