Wanderersways Christmas Quiz

As there's been no Saturday football of great interest, I've set a 10 question quiz. Others things being equal, answers will be confirmed late on Boxing Day. And yes, one prize is available.

Q1: What did Bolton Wanderers do in the FA Cup in the 1880s which no other club has done since, nor ever will (although Nottingham Forest almost did so by 1922)?

Q2: Which team has played several FA Cup finals with 2 Captains in their team?

Q3: Which was the first FA Cup winning team to field capped players from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Q4: Which clubs contested the only FA Cup tie to be contested on Christmas Day?

Q5: Which was the first City club to play in the FA Cup?

Q6: Which was the first United club to play in the FA Cup?

Q7: Which was the first Lancashire club to reach an FA Cup semi-final?

Q8: Name the last 5 FA Youth Cup winning players to go on to represent Bolton Wanderers.

Q9: Name 5 FA Youth Cup finalists from earlier this century to go on to represent Bolton Wanderers.

Q10: Name at least 5 FA Youth Cup finalists from the 20th century to go on to represent Bolton Wanderers.

John O'Kane was in that Munich class of 92, wasn't he?

And would David Thompson have been in any of Liverpool's successful teams in the 90's?

Was "Lydiate the idiot" with them around then?

Q1 was it that we played them all away?

Q1 was it that we played them all away?

Yes - Bolton have played FA Cup ties in all 4 countries (and did them all in the 1880s).

Forest played a semi-final against Queens Park in Edinburgh and visited Cardiff in 1922. They played at home to Linfield Athletic (as they were then known) in 1888-89 and drew, travelling to Belfast for a replay. But by the time they arrived Linfield had formally withdrawn from the competition because of the cost implications of further visits to the mainland. So, since they were there, they played anyway - but it was a friendly, not a cup tie.

Q5)Leeds city?

No. Leeds City was only founded in 1904 as part of a concerted effort to rival Rugby League in the area.

Previously the Elland Road stadium had been home to Holbeck rugby club.

Just explaining how Forest almost equalled it.

Q4: Correct. It was a replay in 1888 after Lifield had beaten Bolton 4-0 and before they drew at Forest.

Brian Kidd one for Q8 or Q10? He played in one for the filth I think, don't know if they won tho

I am pleased to report that ManU teams did not reach the final after 1964 (George Best) until 1982 (Whiteside/Hughes).

So Kidd doesn't have an FA Youth Cup medal. But I suppose a European Cup winners medal may make up for that.

Thanks Malcolm, given that information I'm glad to be wrong

I'll hazard a guess at Paul Wheatcroft, Jon Walters and Leam Richardson for the FA Youth Cup winners

Q4) Linfield & Cliftonville

you beat me too it

Q5 & 6) I know Hanover United played in 1880-90's but no idea on City. I'd guess at Bradford.

Q5: City? Still not right.

Q6: Hanover United is correct! I thought that was likely to cause a lot of difficulty, along with the Christmas Day cup-tie, which has also been nailed above.

Q3: No one has even attempted to offer an answer on this one (First FA Cup winning team with capped players from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)..

Q5: Definitely easier than Q6 (in that everyone will have heard of this club - I once encountered them having their pre-match meal at a motorway services).

Q8: The last 5 (all winners) are Jack Wilshere (2009), Dedryck Boyata, Daniel Sturridge and Vladimir Weiss (all 2008) and Jay Spearing (2007 & 2006).

Casino floated 2 of these and Traf got 4. Between them they solved it.

Q9: 4 of the 5 previous finalists have been found - David Wheater (2004 & 2003), Gary Cahill (2004), Chris Eagles (2003) and Jonathan Walters (2001).

That was 1 to Casino, 2 to Traf and 1 to Walkden26.

I fancy someone can come up with the missing one.

Q10: 3 have been found so far - Leam Richardson (1998), David Thompson (1996), John O'Kane (1993 & 1992),

Tomski got 1, Traf 2 and Walkden26 another 1.

There are several others with first team appearances who appeared in earlier finals.

In fairness, I did throw quite a few names at you! :D

Just coz I live here I'll throw Bristol City into the mix

Q5: Lincoln?
