I think there's an issue with developing old mill sites that have lodges attached, I know they made an estate in between Harrowby Street and New Bury, but the lodge there was well away from the mill.

There's been a plot of land next to Bradford Lodge going spare for an age (at least twenty years) they've built on every available piece of ground around there in the meantime, including a really awkward triangle of land across the road from the Chinese takeaway/Post Office (on Crescent Road) - but no takers for the land near the foundry - which I'm sure is to do with the proximity of Bradford Lodge...

Although I could be talking out of my arse as usual.

Contamination from the foundry.

Guy at at the Loco Works meeting last night had a lot of information about the contamination created by foundries and blast furnaces.

Apparently there's also a cyanide dump at the works but not many people know where it is.

When I was looking for a first house, I had a cursory look at the one opposite the foundry, corner of Crescent Road/Weston Street - it was fooked superficially, but still, even considering that the asking price was miniscule - for quite a lot of house that was fairly sound - now I know why...

Incidentally the bloke who founded the erm..foundry, he's the one who had The Brooklyn Pub built (as his house) built from the sweat of the brow of the common man, now full of the common men. The bloke who owned the tannery up the road had it had his house too (or vice-versa, he built it, t'other took it on, they both lived there tho').

It'll be flattened to make way for houses for ray guns and folk who can't speak a word of the Queen's. MMW

Praise Allah there's the A666, the River Tonge and Leverhulme Park between that area and Camp Bastion (aka Breightmet) - there'd be a uncivil war.

I did do a double take when I went past St Michael's school on Green Lane the other day, there wasn't a white face in the playground (or I couldn't see one) - surely they've got to have dropped the C of E from the school's title?
