15000 pubs have shut since then

tony blair = massive twat on so many levels

How many lives will it improve/save in the long run though? Probably immeasurable.

I don't think the smoking ban killed the pub trade. More likely supermarkets selling dirt cheap ale and brewery's/Sky holding landlords to ransom.

It played a massive part to be fair, as did the point you made. Also man evolving into a metro sexual and spending more time with his family

At first, I also thought it played a massive part, but then I thought about it a bit more and realised it was utter bollocks. The number of people who stopped going to pubs because they could no longer smoke indoors is insignificant. Pubs were dying YEARS before the smoking ban.

If the ban was reversed tomorrow, pubs would be no more busy than they are today.

Agreed.

I don't know one single person that turned down a couple of beers down the local to instead sit at home and wallow in smoke.

Anyone doing that will have no mates anyway.

Who smokes in their house anyway?

Are you kidding. I was living in manc at the time and knew loads that fucked it off. The exact saddos you described yes. But the sort that had no issue mooching in every night. Pubs on estates etc really struggled with plenty defying the ban.

Cheese is correct though that it was dying before that. Just another big nail in the coffin.

For the record. Loads smoke in their houses.

If you don't go to the pub because you can't stand there smoking inside you are quite possibly the saddest bastard this planet has ever seen.

Wouldn't stop me but it was better when you could - as a smoker.

Although I reckon getting chatting  to lasses became much easier for those who liked a tab :)

Still think they should have allowed landlords to make the choice themselves, or at least be able to apply for a smoking licence or whatever.

I get the improved health etc especially for employees and on those grounds it's hard to refute but I would be inclined to think Victor has a point.  Maybe not the sole cause but a large factor.

Only shit pubs close.

The landlords couldn't have a choice. Most pubs are under a brewery and in turn massive corporations. It would be like a branch of McDonald's letting you smoke inside.

I do agree a smoking room could work, but Some of the smoking shelters in pubs round here resemble a log cabin with patio heaters and comfy chairs. Better than some dingy vaults.

I'm going to do some independent investigative journalism as i have a strong hunch that owd Tony had invested big time in the outdoor heating lamp game prior to the ban.

If they let some pubs smoke now though they would very quickly become the houses of the vile, jobless, white-trash class.  You know who you are ;)

Had the choice been available back (to breweries and/or landlords?!) then it may have gone differently and I'd wager less pubs would have closed.

I think the jobless white trash were priced out of pubs a long time ago.

You can buy a 3 litre bottle of 3hammers cider and a pack of space raiders for £4.10

I was thinking of the Wetherspoons type gaffs but as I rarely go in pubs these days you're probably bang on :)

and . . . er . . . where's that deal on?  I like a fruity number to wash down a bag of SRs!

True that and the pub isn't what it was anyhow rare you see the busy ones not doing food the traditional pub of 15-20 years ago is out or on its way out

We went to Eindhoven and the dirty bastards have smoking rooms, no idea why we can't do that. However! It was fucking horrible, I couldn't breathe, I honestly think if I'd been in there more than 2 minutes I could have had a serious asthma attack.

Remember going in a smoking room in the cricketers arms near Birmingham City ground. They had 2 big coal fires going and it was full with big black fellas smoking weed.

I stood out like giraffe wearing dark sunglasses in a polar bears only nightclub.

Was in Berlin around 2011 and was in a tiny bar full of smoke as there was no ban

Even as a smoker at the time it was grim

Looking back I felt guilty the number of times I'd spark up in doors with no regard for non smokers

That said, some places Def suffered for it

Funkademia in Space in Manc, part of its appeal was the tunes they had going on in a dimly lit smoky downstairs cavern of a place, the absence of smoke Def killed it's vibe

The one negative of places like that and others in manc soon started to stink of BO instead. Pure and anything downstairs seemed to reek

It had to happen I suppose (the ban) but it made clubbing etc a bit shitter imo.  A lot of the grungy dives I used to go in became shit pretty much overnight.

And I agree about the BO, had to start buying Lynx again ;)
