Splinters

Stabbed a bit of wood down the side of my finger a few days ago.

Can't see anything though the finger is swelling. If there is something in, does the body naturally break them down in time or am I going to develop digit aids?

Unless it gets infected - in which case you'll need it chopping off :-) If it's hot, red, swollen and painful and you can't get it out yourself then it's probably worth a trip to A&E.

Had one once and my thumb. Got really infected and tender.. squeezed it really hard to try and get some puss out (I know.. not best idea) and a cm long splinter shot out.

I've still got an inch long bit of wood in my hand from a bow and arrow that splintered as I fired it as a kid 45 years ago. Fuckers at the infirmary couldn't be arsed to go through the complications of getting it out, so they just patched it up at either end of the wound and the bastard has been there under the base of my thumb ever since. One day I'll get it cut out. I blame the fact that I'm a fat bald cunt on its presence. If only they'd taken it out, I could have been the new Bond.

Not even sure there's owt in to be honest, perhaps some bugs left in there by the initial thrust?

How do you get one out if you can't see it?

Its certainly hot red and swollen.... Phnaaa

Splinters? Aren't they refered to as spiles in Bolton? Or is a splinter just a spile except bigger or smaller?

Just looked up SPILE.

spile
[spʌɪl]
spiles (plural noun)

  1. a large, heavy timber driven into the ground to support a superstructure.

So maybe just a Bolton way of understating or understating the event.

Tap and Spile was a nice boozer round here until they flogged it and it's now a Chinese restaurant. I say "nice", but it was run by a Burnley fan.

You'd be surprised. A mate of mine has a daughter who's finger was on the verge of amputation after a splinter got infected. Took a load of IV antibiotics and surgery under GA to save it.

Mind you - I'm sure you've had your fair share in your line of work?

Aye, I know they can be pretty serious pal, I was just jesting re TMGJ.

Get them regularly at work, spend more time getting them out than being on the roof.

There you go TMGJ - here's your man. Save the NHS a few quid and get around Miami's! :-)

At least you won't have to wait for 4 hours and you can talk about the football to take your mind off it!

Give over, them saws are toys.

Get the old stihl chain saw on my splinter, that'll sort it!

Anyway, seems a little piffling, doctor suspects lad has a fracture of his elbow. :(

One for kent- it didn't show up on x-ray- but the quack said "sub chondral" fractures are known for sometimes not doing.

Been on t'internet but seems to say sub chondral is to do with femurs so I'm non the wiser.

No probs. Can you cut a few flags while you're at it?

Mate of mine got a spelk in his thumb which swelled up and went red. Went to chemist who told him he could flog him some antiseptic but just as good to put some germolene on it and it'd be fine.

Swelling went down and easy to pull out.

Subchondral just means the fracture is below a bit of cartilage - although I don't understand why it wouldn't show up on an x-ray because you can see straight through cartilage. Mind you I'm not a radiologist or in orthopaedics! :-)

This gives a pretty good explanation of it though.....

As I wondered, wife's just arrived, and I mentioned supracondylar fractures- seen them on the internet, common in kids when falling down and putting hands down, and she reckoned the doctor may well have said that.

Its swollen more while he's been there.
