Possibly not. Bit stuck at the top
Moderators Casino Posted July 14, 2019 Moderators Share Posted July 14, 2019 Aye, i fear our lack of a top 3 will be our undoing Buttler to open, it's the future

bwfcfan5
Jos to keep. Bairstow to open with Roy. I know its proper cricket but they are a pair who bat well together and I don't see better options. Number 3 is tricky. Definitely NOT Moeen he has no form with the bat and 3 is usually a "repair a bad situation" after an early wicket or two. But I do think Roy and Baistow should open. It might not work but can anyone see Burns/Jennings/Stoneman being anything other than fodder for likes of Starc? I have a hunch that in time Stokes could be a test #3. His batting is getting better and better and he's developed a patience I never knew he had. A massive huge risk to play Roy, Bairstow and Stokes as top 3 - but they have the balls. And in the Ashes for me that's a big thing. As for bowlers - Archer apparently not used to bowling 3 spells in a day - is he fit enough? He has a side strain.... Wood - big question if he's fit enough for tests - if he is I think I'd have him in if wickets are suited to his skiddy pace. Woakes - perfect for English wickets. Do you drop Broad? Guest
Talk of Archer (and Woakes) not being involved until the 2nd test. Weird, unless it’s kidology

Weird, unless it’s kidology Archer's been carrying a side strain. Issue for Archer is whether he is acclimatised to bowling 3 spells a day....all at pace... One days he might bowl two main spells and the second will be a lot of slower balls. Tests you will bowl 3 spells a day and most of what you will need to bowl will be full pace deliveries. If he only has one plus 90 spell in him - that could be an issue.

But, we’ll not know until we try it? Are we counting on winning at Edgbaston because we always do?!

I'd play him. I think its going to be a tough call for first test. Play a lot of the one day lot because they have the momentum and might scare the Aussies - but risk - injury/fatigue and also their lack of test experience and know-how. Or pick a more traditional test side that probably isn't going to worry the Aussies as much. Its easy to get carried away on winning a world cup and throw lads into tests who aren't ready and get battered. Its also easy to go too conservative and lose any momentum. It depends on what you think the default is. I think by default we'll lose. So take risks and play lads who are on top of the world. But if you think with a more traditional side we will win...then take less risks.

Default I reckon is even Stevens; I’m thinking that our pace and other quality bowling will negate theirs and we are about level in batting. Sure, but so is theirs Notice how they’ve got batters into counties and their B team have had 3 matches so far; superior preparation etc
