Lambretta

Anyone got one? After years of bugging my dad he gave in and give me his old one out of storage to do up

The engine started up without the body on

Finally cleaned it up all put together and wouldn’t start

My old man said the Carburettor probably needs cleaning, took it out and cleaned it. Nothing.

Changed the spark plugs and it got going then started spluttering and won’t start again

Any ideas?

I love Quadrophenia i do. I was 17/18 when it was released and i first saw in in London with some southern birds we’d met in Spain. It’s not that the film was worthy of any Oscars or anything - in fact i’ll admit the acting is a bit shit, but i love the soundtrack & it just reminds me of my youth. The film sparked a bit of a mod revival in the UK around ‘79/‘80, so Fred Perrys and Sharp suits were being seen again and the battling with “smellies” was a regular pastime in towns all over the UK at weekends. There were one or two decent Mod revival bands formed at the time and it also coincided with the start of the 2 Tone Music scene which was no bad thing. It was just a great era to be young.

Yes mate. Leaving out The Jam for a moment, Purple Hearts and The Chords were top drawer. There were some 'less than good' around too like the Lambretta's and the Merton Parkas. Great time as you say when you think of the mindless fucking dross we'd had to put up with from the likes of Abba, Boney M and other such eurotrash bollocks. Selecter, The Beat, The Specials etc. holding up the Jamaican influence and it was indeed a great time to be around.

And they're supposed to be the smart lot? What a bunch of grubby scruffy c*nts...

Still, to be expected in an era where you wiped your arse with newspaper, your choice of bathing was limited to a tin bath with 2" of water from the kettle or going to the swimming baths and your 'threads' were bought on the never-never and were 'washed' in a zinc tub in the backyard.

We've done this before. I would be far more suspicious of the insecurities and inadequacies of those who choose to wear studded leather garb (The Village People for example - ooh, hello sailor) and who feel the need to be astride masculine throbbing lumps.

Far more masculine to mount something with feminine curves and scoot by at a leisurely pace allowing the hoi polloi and other assorted scruffy cunts to check out your expensive and perfectly presented threads.

I know, I know. You once owned a Fred Perry reject from the TK Maxx clearance rack.

Alright mate,  my latest machine is now up for sale as ill health forces it, sadly never to ride again, I downsized to a Kawasaki ex300A Ninja (anniversary edition) after coming off the Versey 1000 so no more jesting about scooters now, I may even get one myself

Rivi barn has history in this regard old bean. One Easter Sunday (would have been '70 or '71) over a hundred of us arrived to find 30-50 scruffy git rockers in full regalia (all the classy stuff - bog chain stolen from public toilets decorating leather jackets; white thick woollen socks turned over the top of ugly biker boots etc) already occupying our promised land. Bottles and pint glasses launched at us the minute we came into view. I can't name names but certain well known gents from the Lever End steamed in with hammers and other attitude adjustment tools and a pitched battle ensued. They were armed with motorcycle chains and flick knives.

They soon realised they were about to come off very badly worst and a few of them got on the roof and started slinging roof tile/slates at us. Bikes had just been kicked over and fins being smashed off Bonneville, Commando and Gold Star cylinders when the Police sirens came into earshot. Mass panic evacuation followed.

During my (what I thought was clever) escape plan I got run off the road by a group of the greasy turds driving a Reliant Robin. A fucking Reliant Robin! Classless is permanent.

Ended up going up a bit of a grass bank and got ripped to fuck going through some privet hedges (wasn't bothered about my face and hands or the paintwork on my Pacemaker but my clothes! Shredded. The cunts!) Some geezer and his wife sat at a table in their garden reading Sunday papers and sipping something I would now suspect to be Pimms just sat there blinking at me in stunned silence. Gave them a right shock I did.

My incident was around 1978/79 . Used to head to the barn Sunday mornings once the football season was over. Then head over to Southport or Blackpool.

Saturday nights were spent in The Swan cellar bar or the Lower Nags.

Football season , just used to stop in town after home games.

Buzz inn was another of my haunts.

Also if boxing was on , the Pack Horse was the best venue.

Clean living under difficult circumstances. Wouldn't expect the likes of you to get it. Better leave what you are incapable of understanding well alone.

R - that is one of the biggest anticlimaxes I have had so far this year. I was sure you'd bite - especially at the TK Maxx jibe ;):D

Hope you do get one. Sorry to hear about ill health mate. Trust all is well.

There was a large amount of excellant cover bands around then , plus some decent bands playing most of their own stuff.

Plenty more places to play as well.

Salford Jets were always a good night out.

Station Hotel

Bulls Head

Aquarius

Lower Nags

Remember going to watch the Salford Jets in Swinton ( thursday nights).

Good show.

Salford Jets

World of Sport- style wrestling.

Plus 2 strippers.

How would a night out like that go down right now mate? There'll be some serious partying when the restrictions are lifted.

I was punk and ska all the way. Fred Perry, Harrington, etc. Specials, Clash, Jam but the punk side of me had me liking loud and fast music like AC/DC and Motörhead.

Friday night in The Swan Cellar with my biker brother getting funny looks cos my hair wasn’t long enough. Saturday afternoon in the town centre running around trying to not get twatted by the same folk as I was sporting Fred Perry and the Mods giving me funny looks cos my hair was too long

Aquarius always a good place to see a decent band. And they had a Space Invaders machine in the lobby if the band was shit

I’ll see if I can upload a couple of photos, there’s my dad uncle and 3 of his mates, Fred Perry’s, parkas and macs,  fast forward 40 years and me and my mates have an identical picture. Mam was big into Ska as well, that’s the scene where they met.

My one regret I never had a proper parka. Brother had the blue snorkel with the orange lining to the hood. I desperately wanted the green one with the red lining.

Proper parka is an M-51 with the removable alpaca lining. All others are pale imitations.
