Lambretta

Anyone got one? After years of bugging my dad he gave in and give me his old one out of storage to do up

The engine started up without the body on

Finally cleaned it up all put together and wouldn’t start

My old man said the Carburettor probably needs cleaning, took it out and cleaned it. Nothing.

Changed the spark plugs and it got going then started spluttering and won’t start again

Any ideas?

I Have a 1962 LI 125. Could be a number of things but I’d check the gap on the spark plug. Also check the connections. Make sure the ht lead is screwed securely into both ends. Also Adjust the mixture screws on the carburettor. After that, Bolty is your man. What model and year is it?

It may seem a simple question but did you use the choke to start it?

They sell new engines at Vidal Sassoon,

Think of your fire triangle from science.. You need energy, oxegen and fuel

Check the air filter, even if one isn't there should be fine.. but if it's full of gunk.. no

Check the spark plugs, should be in good condition, replace if needed, is the battery ok? (Newer ones may have some imobiliser on but it's rare), are the lights coming on the dials when you turn the ignition on? Do they look dim?

Check the petrol. is it fresh? Is the fuel filter blocked? Is it coming through..

Once they are all fine, it should start fine, the carbs being dirty will make it run crap, but should still start to some extent.

Just read your post again..

Either, you haven't put a wire back properly, or you may have nipped the fuel line and it's kinked.. Did it start at all when you put the body back on?

It was originally a Tv175 to be honest it’s a mongrel with all kinds of different shite on it.

So I checked the spark plug, and dipped the petrol still seems fresh.

Made sure the fuel filter tube was fine, little kink in it, straightened it out and it started.

Then it started spluttering like fuck. Checked everything again, carburettor is covered in liquid again? Think it’s fuel, need to find out where it’s coming from

Possibly a perished pipe feeding to the carb, check the ends to see if one has split and that it's a flush fit,

There is a hairline split in the pipe, so I assume as soon as the engine goes on it starts pissing out and then air is getting in causing it to splutter.

Ill give it another bash tomorrow

Rub it with a b’loon

If you can cut it back to where it's sound, if you can't it's new pipe time as they're quite high pressure, they're not much, you could try with self amalgamating tape, but i doubt you would get the pressure, if you live anywhere near farnworth i've got some here you could use.

He will be on the next available flight over to sort it. Look forward to reading again how he used to ride 1 over the pennines to Yarkshire . Battling the snow and ice. Never let him down once.

Strange how when on my Sunday afternoons riding to Southport and Blackpool on my Yamaha's , we used to pass at least 14 broken down everytime.

The owners stood there in their green parka's scratching their heads.

Right thats the bait !!

On a serious note, there is probably a bit of crap in the fuel system.

Or if it does bugger all , you have caught a wire .

Good luck.

The wife’s face when I got it home. She won’t be complaining when she has a ride and the vibrations rival her hitachi wand 😁

I’ll bite.
The difference between a Yamaha and a Lambretta is like the difference between United and Bolton.
Class and passion sometimes involves an unscheduled and unwelcome breakdown along the way.
Most United fans just wear the red shirt, bikers take the leather, full kit wanker look to the extreme.

😊👍

Woah Boby , i looked the dogs Black Leather ,red quilted Jacket with leather fringe tassels across the back n arms. Motorhead bullet / studded belt. Wrangler cut off battle jacket when riding.

Always wore the jacket home n away games .

Miss it , mind you would be a bit tight now.

She’s absolutely desperate for me to go back to work.

Since lockdown I’ve bought chickens and a coop, a puppy who’s not here yet, fixing up an old beat up scooter and started building a bar in my shed. Going frigging mad not working

Swanny and Boby on the ball.

Rudy, how long has it been sat mate? FFS, ditch the old fuel and give everything a good clean out including the fuel filter. Old fuel turns into something resembling a sticky varnish and blocks off venturi in the carb. If you're game enough, you can clean and service the carb yourself. Take it apart and boil it in a pan of water. Give it plenty of time to dry in the nice weather (blasting with compressed air if you have it available). If you're not game enough there'll be plenty of help available around that neck of the woods.

New spark plug correctly gapped, replace perished fuel lines and you have a fair chance of success. Changing the gearbox oil too once you have it running. SAE 90 mineral oil - NOTHING with EP additives if you value your clutch.

You lot and your fucking rice burners. No class scruffy tickets to a man.

Just to refresh your memory old bean, not snow and ice on the Lambretta. I wasn't that game!  Low lying cloud (fog) and sheep were the problem once I got past the Floating Light (if you know it?) and around the White Lion at Slaithwaite. The scootering types on here will know all about AF Rayspeed up near Malton. Rays S Type Specials are renowned for being reliable (unusual with Lambretta's I concede!) and my GP200 was a belter in that regard. Gloss black all over with the name 'Marwell' signwritten on each side in tribute to the racehorse that paid for it :D Sold it to a teenager from Haslingden just before leaving Blighty. Gutted when I got to Wollongong and found out they did actually know what scooters were. They'd been here for fucking ages. Should have browt it. Pillock.

Thats made my day , Bolty.

Mind you i have bugger all planned. ( other than a few bottles on the south terrace if the sun comes out at 3pm.).

One day i hope our paths cross in a Spanish bar down Benalmadina or even in Notlob.

That will be a meeting of minds

and a hell of a session.

Stay safe , keep those 16 mirrors polished , put The Who on full blast and scare off the koala's.

Cheers Bolty. The wife has promised us a day to myself so I’ve got the time to do it today. Just been and got some fresh petrol. I’ll keep you posted.

You are most definitely on mate. Try and get a bit closer to Estepona though! Alternatively, I do intend spending future months of August in my home town. Hopefully commencing in 2021!

One mirror - two at most. Like them pretty much how they come off the production line with any alterations being performance related. I could bore you to tears with this side of things - as an example, my Lancashire themed customised PX222E has a MMW uprated clutch, stroked Malossi kit; ceramic piston crown and exhaust port; dry film lubricant treated piston skirt; cryogenically treated drive train, PK flywheel; RZ stainless exhaust...................have you nodded off yet? :D

The Who on full blast works - even better The Small Faces. Other than that it would be afro american or afro caribbean tunes enriching my soul.
