I've always thought it was a massive mistake continuing to tax the price of a pint, whilst you can go down to Adsa and pick a case of 24 cans of Stella for £12. Obviously there are shit loads of crap pubs that over the years are as well going to the wall but there are also a massive number of proper pubs whos reach extended into the community in a positive way. Its these pubs which has been fucked over whilst people decide to sup at home. Nevermind the debate about the massive rise in drinking at home and the domestic/social problems this can create on a longer term basis. I'd wholeheartedly support a fresh approach to supporting the brewing and pub industry whilst increasing the tax on booze bought in bulk from the supermarkets.
