Ronnie first up. I think he has his work cut out today. This lad looks very confident.

Up there with the greats for me.

Yes for sure although he is going to have to play out of his skin at 15-10 down to resurrect this one. I did not think Brecel could pot this well over a longer match but he has been outstanding.

Flicked it on earlier.

They were getting upset about people coughing. One of the players looked like one of the BWFC dwarfs from Phoenix Nights.

Then someone coughed and they all laughed.

I can see the appeal.

It's not for you, but you're craving some attention. We get it.

What a final that was! Feel sorry for people who don't understand snooker.

Is that a sport now as well?

understanding snooker is the easy bit, enjoying it not so much

If you don't enjoy it, you don't understand it.

I appreciate that you like it, but to say that just because somebody else doesn't enjoy watching it means they don't understand it is a bit ridiculous.

I understand it.

I’ve even played it. Got a break of over 50.

It’s not a sport though.

Unless you fight each other with the sticks.

I don't care if it's a "sport" or not. You clearly don't undertand it. We get it.

This what you say to Mrs Cheese?

I think its a great game. Struggle to watch a full match though.

They should have less frames and a time limit.

The Pheonix Nights comment did get me.

Still doesn’t make up for all the snooker trolling. Reminds me of the gammons that just had to pop onto the Women’s footy thread to tell us how shite it was. If ya dinnae like it, dinnae watch it 😉

The Shootout is ideal for you.

I also ‘understand’ the game enough to know that there are very few frames which need the inclusion of snookers. In fact, the requirement for snookers is a very small part of the game.

Does it make good viewing? Not any more, in my opinion. It used to be a game played by blokes with a bit of character. These days it seems the fun side of the game has been mostly overtaken by the need-to-win game played by those raised as kids to play snooker. It’s like watching automatons!

I once went to that "Speed Snooker" with work, it was a free piss up, so I didn't like to turn it down - fucking hell, that was shit

I take it you didn't watch Luca Brecel win the World Championship yesterday then?

No. The automatons playing these days just don’t interest me the way the likes of Knowles, Virgo, Parrott, Hendrey, Steve Davis, White, Taylor, Thorburn, Wurbiniek, Spencer, Griffiths, Stevens, Fagan, Charlton, Joe Davis, Fred Davis, etc.

And right there is perhaps the issue. Back in my childhood/youth/early adulthood these players were household names. I’ve named those 16 without google or wracking my brain. I couldn’t even tell you who many of today’s players are.

We were limited to 3 then 4 and eventually 5 channels so snooker on telly was on 33%, 25% or 20% of the channels. Nowadays there is such a lot of other stuff taking up my free time.

edit - how the hell have I missed Higgins, Mountjoy & Rearden?

Steve Davis was the most automaton player ever! Sounds like you've just lost interest, which is fair enough.

Brecel plays pure attacking snooker. Really good to watch. And he spent most of his off-table time during the tournament getting pissed apparently, only practising for 15 minutes before every match. I know what you're getting at regarding the lack of "characters", but it's nowhere near as sterile as you think. The World Championship really was a fantastic tournament this year. Best for a while.
