It is amazing given how badly we defend and are organised we have only conceded more than one goal in one league game this season and are averaging less than one goal conceded in the league

When you also consider that TSL ranks 23/24 amongst L1 goalkeepers save percentage (6/12: 50%) and our defence are ranked 1/24 for attempts on target conceded (just the aforementioned 12 in 7) it almost makes you question the hysteria on here about our defence.

For what little it’s worth, I thought George Johnston was excellent on Saturday, against a big strong forward line.

SS would argue that it’s all good defensively though - and as long as this tactic continues to produce good statistics he’ll be right regardless of whether or not it seems risky to us. By leaving some people unmarked and concentrating defence into key danger areas is making damn sure the opposition have to work hard and produce real quality for their goals which is exactly what was needed TBF and the goals against column could have been even better if e.g. TSL hadn’t muffed a routine near post save from McGoldrick. If the players get even better at it and it doesn’t get worked out we could well end the season with the meanest defence in the league.

Almost like our manager and coaches know more about this than posters on t’internet.

Cardiff have only conceded 1 goal so far this season .

And that save % will only improve through the season too. When you look at the goals conceded, there are a couple of absolute flukes which skew things only looking at 7 games. If the defence keep only allowing so few shots, that conversion % will only reduce, which means we’ll concede less goals.

Going back to the doubters that still think the club is not stronger this season and we are a mid-table team.....Compare how the team was at the back end of last season,

The first 18 is the squad last game of the season at home against Stevenage.......The second is players not starting last Saturday

We are country miles further than we finished last season off

And that was a penalty. Cardiff’s defence have conceded 16 attempts on target in just 6 games (our defence are 12 from 7 remember). The difference is, their keeper has saved all 16 attempts: 100%.

We have conceded 6 Barnsley was a keeper error. Stockports first was an mis hit shot they deflected in, Reading massive deflection, Blackpool deflected, post, back of keepers head, Lincoln foul in the build up.

We have only conceded 1 proper goal all season and that was 89th minute as we were chasing game.

But I still get coliwobbles every time we defend 🤷‍♂️😜😂😎

Cardiff are playing well in all departments and i think will carry on all season and have every chance of being Champions next May. Stevenage are this seasons Wycombe and wont last.  Huddersfield and Luton are much like our selves and i think all three will contest for the second spot......Doncaster could be this years Stockport.......I think we are just starting to see Schumacher ideas and system start to be understood by our squad and i can only see us getting stronger week on week.......Going to call it now  promotion next May

Exactly. Even without being too rose tinted, there’s bad luck involved in 3 of our 6 goals conceded (from a keeper’s point of view).

There will always be these goals, and I’m not saying that they should be discounted, but over a short period of games I’d say we’re over-indexed with conceding unlucky goals which should balance out over the season.

I’d be very surprised if his save % is 50% by the end of the season.

Bradford despite losing to Doncaster have some momentum carried over from last year. Hopefully it won’t continue.

Me too, but we have the makings of a competitive team and if Schumacher can get more ruthlessness out of our attack and the defence continues to improve we could be in with a shout at the end of the season if we don’t get blighted by injuries again (even though we have more depth now)
One thing is for sure - we’re an entertaining watch. I love that, but it’s all about wins and points on the board and an away win at Orient would be a good start.

Save percentages can only go so far.

What wes the Xg of each of those chances?

If, over a season, he lets a number through his hands, or drops crosses etc then there maybe something to bother about.

At the moment, there isn't.

I wasn't talking about Bolton, it was about the tactic generally. We've not had many corners to defend that I can recall. We scored from the only one Lincoln got in the 2nd half 😀

Obviously if we'd brought all 11 back as we would have in normal circumstances that breakaway goal couldn't have happened!

Wigan scored a break away albeit from a free kick v Lincoln on Saturday, great kick from the keeper.

Yeah, Johnston has mainly been great this season for me. It seems to go unnoticed by many should he get caught out once. All the defence have been good generally, albeit never under sustained pressure for long periods like some teams that have played us. I feel like we've been unlucky with many of the goals conceded, as others have pointed out.

We’ve been as lucky with some of the goals we’ve scored then we have with the ones we’ve conceded.

We’ve scored from deflections, mishit shots that someone else steers in, or a lucky bounce into someone’s path.

But we do look a good team. We’ve a low XG against us and a high XG for us and whilst a lot of people poopoo these newfangled stats, they’re certainly an indicator of good performance. Second biggest test of the season so far on Saturday though. They’re an intense and tough team and they’ll certainly have chances. We’ll see if TSL can hopefully save more than half of them!

I don't see a deflection as being particularly lucky.

Having got into a shooting position, and made defenders work, then there is always a chance.

That's why the best team have the most "luck". They create more opportunities and concede fewer in defence.
