Bolton's big-match bottleneck

 

A FOOTBALL supporters' association today called for urgent improvements at the Reebok Stadium's car parks to prevent motorists being caught up in appalling delays after matches.

 

Kath Brown, membership secretary of Bolton Wanderers Supporters' Association, said drivers regularly faced delays of between one and two hours because of a "limited" number of exits.

 

She called for better traffic light filter systems, widened access roads and more exits from the car parks.

 

Kath said: "The club complain that people leave games early but that is the reason why - because it takes everyone so long to leave the car parks.

 

"There needs to be more exits. The Bolton bottleneck is a long-standing joke and the situation needs to be addressed."

 

Four car parks operate on match days, holding 5,500 cars.

 

Car park A is for visiting fans and guests of the stadium's De Vere Whites Hotel only. Car park B is for permit holders and fans pay ??5 to use car park C. Car Park D is a match day overspill.

 

The club's free buses, which run fans to and from the 28,000-capacity stadium from points across Bolton, are allowed to leave first after games, followed by away fans.

 

The BWSA also claimed cars merging simultaneously from neighbouring Middlebrook Retail Park were causing "dangerous" problems and called for a better system of traffic lights.

The Reebok Stadium is also next to a Tesco store and Bolton Arena sports centre. Mrs Brown added: "People are coming out from all directions, all trying to get into a single flow of traffic. It gets anger going and gets people frustrated.

 

"I'm surprised that there haven't been any bad accidents. People jostle for the same position and there should be a lot more exit points.

 

"It needs a real good rethink. We have brought it up with them so many times but to no avail."

 

But the club said no plans were in place to change the system.

 

John Walsh, head of car park management on match days, said delays on match days were no longer than an hour.

 

He said: "I go to every Bolton Wanderers game and I have not found a single stadium that does it better." The club also pointed to the stadium's position 300 yards away from a major motorway junction.

 

Mr Walsh added: "As well as football traffic, there are people on the road as of right. We have no jurisdiction on that.

 

"We do have traffic signals that the police control to maximise traffic flow.

 

"There are no new roads we could build as we have already widened the two main dual carriageways. There is little else we could do."

 

What a load of b0ll0cks, I never leave before the final whistle. It takes about 20 minutes till all the buses are gone, then 10 minutes to get off the car park.

i think its the people who arrive late that end up at the back car park which obviously take longer to get off again...

yeah, she has a point, but theres no easy answer, and theres other stuff that i think a true representative body should be addressing

 

truth of it is, theres too much traffic for the roads to cope - organised or not

 

not sure how this fits with any request that could be made to increase stadium capacity

Why not extend the road that runs through the business park at the north end of the stadium to meet Chorley New road (somewhere near Chortex Mill)?

Why not just put big Evil Kenevil ramps all over the car parks so those that are in a hurry can just jump over the cars in front of them and be on their merry way?

There could be special rubber cars that you put 50p's in so that if there were any collisions, no body would get hurt and when you brought them back the next match, you got your 50p back..... Like the Morrisions trolley idea

It pisses me off that the buses get priority for getting off first. fcuk em. The fans who pay the club upfront for the whole season should get preferential treatment and be allowed off first. fcuk them ragging buses.

The widening of Dehavilland way was aimed to help with match day traffic the other side of the M61 is in the pipeline for some time this year! its down to Emerson the land owners of middlebrook to arrange construction of another exit road. the Council and BWFC can't do bugger all around there without Emersons say so!

However, what's with the non-English speaking retards serving drinks in the West Lower (Southern End)? I ordered two drinks and this halfwit serving me actually needed to use a calculator to work out the total price and then also the amount of change needed from a fiver! It's no wonder it takes 20 minutes to get served at half-time. It's just as well it was a poor crowd.
