What happens with European places if the semi finalists are scum newcastle , AN Other and us, newcastle vs scum in final and newcastle win the UEFA Cup, or does that complicate things too much.

Probably won't matter as we'll win it anyway. :D/

I think it goes to the next league position. :-k

This is from one of the 'Proper' supporters who went to the game on Saturday. :D/

I may send a cardboard cut-out version of me to the Q/F.

Well by all accounts Gartside admitted that they were going for the Cup this season when he came to the London Whites do before Xmas (actually the day before the Chelsea game so in fact late November.). Did he shout about this enough? Did he come out right at the start and say look we're going for it this year and try to drum up support that way?

One thought here that might help to explain some of the apathy:

most people will only get to home games. Thats a given really; after all, with 20000 ST holders and usually maybe 3k or less away tickets up for grabs it has to be the case. And given that for many the ST is a major outlay anyhow, they just may not be able to afford the away games.

So in general people's perception of how we're doing will be coloured by the home games.

Now then, 97-98 season we got relegated (the Chelsea last game of the season one); this year we're 7th thus far. So you might think it fair to say that things have progressed... but if you just look at home games we find that in 97-98 our average points haul per home game was 1.53, average number of goals scored per home game 1.32 and average total number of goals scored by both teams per home game 2.47.

This year, over the 14 games played the average points haul per game is 1.57, goals per home game 1.21 and total goals per home game 2.07.

So points-wise we're doing no better than the relegation season really (up just 2%).

Goals scored wise we're scoring 8% less per game.

Total goals per game we're seeing 16% less.

So if we accept that the majority of people's perceptions are largely governed by home games then realistically we're doing worse than in the relegation season. People are buying STs to make sure they can get to big games, to do their bit for the finances...but they are happy to miss average games because quite simply the level of entertainment is distinctly average. And unless you make it clear that the Cup is a priority then they will apply that same routine to Cup games.

Good points well made

But I can't help think he enjoyed having summat to get his name in he paper. He ain't afraid of the camera / microphone is he?

And the media attention? It was multiplied three times over when he made his statement. More ammo to the anti-Bolton brigade.

As has been said before - what exactly was he trying to achieve?

get people off their arses and down to the ground........

don't think you can doubt his intentions

just his methods, which as i say, i disagree with

That's the job of the marketing department headed by a certain Mr Moores. To me the club has missed an opportunity to give us season ticket holders that 'WOW FACTOR', especially ones like myself who missed out on an official ticket for the CCF in Cardiff. This could have been free entry or even a discount greater than the 'JCL's' to one of the Carling Cup (Tottenham) or FA Cup (Fulham). But the club continues to class all season ticket holders for cup games the same as non-season ticket holders, and that for me is part of the problem.

Having said all that still went on Saturday, but still feel that BWFC could have done something to win back the fans!

Anyway, bollocks to all that, ONWARDS AND UPWARDS !!!!

I'll say it again - the biggest issue with this was that it was Fulham we were playing - our biggest recent bogey team by some distance. I went, but was honestly expecting us to lose.

Have you lot been on the brave pills ?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

This town does not deserve a bloke like me!

How many people have put as much money as I have into a club that they don't even give a toss about ?

Yes, that's right.

No fcuker!

I worked through the fcuckin night at Warbies to make sure Big Sam had the cash he needed to buy the players he's got.

Maybe I might get the appreciation I deserve elsewhere ?

And then you'll all be crying like a big set of fcukin babies.

To$$ers!

It's right what they say on Rivals about you lot.

Hey, steady on Phil.

I don't think its cos they are our bogey team. I did not stay at home because I thought we would lose. That would be sacriledge. But the match with Fulham did not rock my boat. Sorry. A well-hyped cup tie with Derby would have whetted my appetite and got me up to the Reebok. I think they would certainly have sold between 4k-6k of tickets - that would have bolstered the crowd to 21,000. And I think many more Bolton fans would have made the effort - for a more attractive game - one which would probably have captured the whole essence of the FA Cup. So we could realistically have seen a crowd of 24,000+. Easy.

Am I right in thinking your goals-per-game statistic takes into account goals by both teams?

Bolton have pretty much sorted a previously leaky defence since New Year, therefore to use total goals per game from the '97 season where we were scoring goals but letting in a sum of our goals + 1, then comparing it to the current time where we are scoring goals but the opponents are scoring our goals - 1 your argument doesn't stand up.

i blame stelios!

no hang on, I remember what I was banging on about. My point was that being 7th as opposed to relegated you might expect greater things of the home games...but our average points is the same and our goals scored less. Put bluntly our home form is worse than the season we went down, which is why crowds are poor. I think....
