The flashing speed limits on motorways - are they legally enforsable?

 

Past the Trafford Centre, flashing 40mph this morning, for no reason, other than they forgot to shitch them off last night.

 

If you carry on at 70, can they do you for speeding?

if you have entered the 70mph bit on the M60 (there is one of them, honest ) and you get flashed at 40 then its b??llocks.

 

Did you pass the National Speed Limit sign beforehand when exiting the roadworks, if not you are still in the speed limit zone for which the last sign you saw displayed.

 

(well actually its the last displayed sign, not the last one you saw because I can drive for an hour and a half without noticing any speed limit signs 8-[ )

Smiffs, he's not talking about the roadworks from hell near me. He means the overhead gantry signs near the Trafford Centre. They get switched to 40 at "rush" hour, but sometimes they forget to switch them off.

 

The answer Mr. Hunt is that the section I think you refer to has no speed cameras, but if a policeman was to stop you doing over whatever was displayed on the suigns, you'd be nicked, like any other road.

They are only legal if they are like the ones near Heathrow on the M25. Those don't flash and have a red border around them. And they have a speed camera on the back.

A red circle, white background and big black number stating a speed limit is a legal sign. Overhead gantry signs are advisory.

I know of a certain Met officer who was going to an urgent enquiry just over the borders into Thames Valley 3am new years day morning last year in a marked police vehicle and got flashed by a camera. 36mph in a 30 and they wouldn't drop it
