nearly 40,000 turn up to see us lose the game by one goal in a game that we dominated and were expected to win.

 

luton tried to take the lever end with about 300 of their skins having a go, however good numbers kept em hemmed in in the top corner of the lever towards the mannie road until the boys in blue formed their customary human wall between the antagonists.

Was it a Clockwork Orange fancy dress for some of the Luton lads

i was there i was only a kid at the time.

remember the luton lads some in war paint dressed in orange boiler suits.

get backed off in the lever end .some getting a serious kicking if i remember.

sticks in the memory that one all the luton fans who came into lever end all had warpaint on their faces, so the following week we were playing york away and loads of lads started putting warpaint on before getting on the special train only to be told they weren`t going nowhere if they kept it on about a minute before boarding, never seen so much frantic washing of faces

So thats why luton used to pitch up on site in orange overalls

Thought they'd come in to give the barriers (things you held onto and also stopped you being trappled with the sway of crowd) a coat of paint in their crisp white overalls

I remember Ian Greaves being interviewed on Football focus before the game saying that promotion was the priority but he could not tell his side to go out and lose. I immediately knew Bolton were going to lose and after seeing the game it was so obvious. Bolton battered Luton all through the game and got beat 1-0. I don't think Aston will ever forget the chants of Munich Reject which he received from the Burnden Terrace.

I was in the Manny Road south paddock when all these Luton fans with painted faces tried attacking us, we put up a great resistance until reinforcments arrived, great days were they.

there were only two teams who ever "took" the lever. man u and chelsea...the latter taking every part of the ground and the ragging pitch for good measure. i had the dubious experience of being chased into 4 different stands/terraces that day.

The day you are on about with Chelsea was the day I saw one of the funniest episodes I ever saw (by the way - they didn't take the Burnden paddock - sent ??m back to the Embankment with their tails between their legs). When they ran back towards the Paddock after chasing a few kids out of the Lever End, a couple of em set about an old St. Johns ambulanceman. He wrenched the halfway line flag out of the ground and tw*tted one of em with it - drops the flag and then treats him for the head wound he caused! Classic.

I seem to remember Sheff U making a pretty good effort in their "win or riot" game in the eighties.

I remember that Chelsea game well when their fans ran accross the pitch, one bright spark ran along side the manny road paddock and was decked by a steaming hot pie, great memories keep em coming

Remember the game at burnden against Wolves mid 70's,they were made champs that day i think,at the final whistle hundreds of the "old orange" fcukers ran accross the pitch and tried to "take" the lever,the first 20 or so that managed to get over the fence into the lever got smashed bad,then the old bill stopped the rest from trying.

I remember that day well. If wed have beaten Wolves we would have been promoted, Ray Train missed a few sitters ans we did everything bar score.
