To be honest very rarely , but it should be given more often ... look at it this way if a challenge was that badly timed in midfield most people would want to the guy to be given a red card let alone a free kick.

How many times is a free kick awarded to the keeper in the box? You'd think the free-kick count would be 50/50 but you rarely see a penalty kick given in the moments before a free kick/corner/throw is launched into the box.

Also if Drogba hadn't headed the ball in the net against Pool on Sat,would the ref have given a penalty seeing though Reina punched Drogba's lights out.
