Eighteen years ago today!

 

Being of a certain age I am old enough to remember when finishing 7th in the top division and looking forward to European football next season was only something that dreams were made of - back then a visit to Wembley (for the second time in three years!) for a cup final was something to be savoured!

 

Ok the cup final in question was only the Sherpa Van Trophy and the opposition was the mighty Torquay United - but we were there again and keen to seek revenge for our 3-0 defeat in the final to another West Country team - Bristol City three years previous!

 

Sluffy's Date's cannot find much on the net about the game - wasn't much tinternet about in those days - but those of you there like me - could not decide what was more unbelievable - that we won or that Dean Crombie had scored - and what a cracker it was too!

 

Happy days back then - things were beginning to look up again for us Phil Neal had stopped the rot - and a certain Mr Rioch would soon be there to take us onwards and upwards!

going back to the bristol city game , remember millwall turned up at the top of wembley way, bolton and bristol gave them a good slapping and off they went with their tails between their legs twas a splendid day out !

A great weekend, went on the lash in Kilburn on the day of the game, there were some not reets from Bolton there that day

One of our party, from an earlier generation, refused to remove his suit, tie and overcoat out of deference to the event. I thought he was going to keel over on Wembley Way.

Can't believe it's 18 years ago.......................I remember after the game thinking "It doesn't get much better than this"

Aye, it was a boiling hot day. I was only 7 back then so couldnt go, gutted. Listened to it on GMR in the back garden and I remember the sun sure was beating down.

I watched the Road Runner video for days on end after. Dave Higson....Legend.

What about Winstanleys goal in the earlier rounds. It was from about 40 yards against Wrexham I think?

I'll have to dig out my old roadrunner video for this one. Great stuff

A very late equaliser when all looked lost. Infact from a similar spot on the pitch (but at Burnden ofcourse!!) that Campo smashed that goal against Spurs this season.

 

 

Did Winstanley also score the winner in extra time?
