Our Problems Could Be Solved By Signing One Decent Centre Half

I honestly believe that our problems can be sorted by signing a pretty decent centre half. Who is there? Frankly, I dont care if they're 35 and only got a season left in them, if they are hard and can plug the leaks, that'll do for me.

I think it is more a formation problem than a centre half problem, as I have sais elsewhere I think we should play somebody in the midfield holding role.

I think Sammy Hyppia would do a job - steadying influence etc

I agree we only need to sort the defending side of our game out. A decent couple of defenders and nolan pulling his head out of his arse would do the team the world of good

Agree with MK, our midfield doesnt protect the back four nowhere near enough and when youve got a new partnership at CB under so much pressure all the time we are obviously going to keep shipping the goals.

I think campo would make a huge difference.

Nail on the head!!! Obvious from day one. Teams are breaking from midfield and carving through a defence that has hardly played together. I know Hunt gets some abuse on here but yesterday he was embarrassing along with Cid.

Oh dear I thought we had more than enough problems with Andy OBrian!!!

Mikel Silvestre?

Mikel Silvestre?

Now now

we already have him Faye!! can play either CB or sit him in front of defence

go on, i'll talk to you

give us some examples cos i'm not seeing it

aye, i'm blinkered, so go on

in what way was he so bloody poor?

Nicky hunt was very poor yesterday. he had no first touch. He should of done better with the second goal and compared to how he has played so far this season he was rubbish

a whoile load of waffle there

no first touch?

should have done better with the second? in what way?

the same way that anelka should've done better than cheaply giving the ball away

the same way somebody should have been deeper than hunt

fwiw, i reckon utaka did very well with his goal

fair play to you though, at least you didn't blame him for the first :good:

Well we aren't going to sign Ferdinand and Terry. We are never going to have the best Centre Backs in the league. Therefore we have to ensure the defensive side of the team is very well organised.

Portsmouth's first two goals yesterday were assisted by gaping holes in the middle of the defence, and they were a couple of other similar situations where they didn't score. They were no glaring individual mistakes by defenders just a complete lack of organisation and communication. Without the defensive structure being there, it doesn't matter who we sign.

and thats as big a frustration as any

whether lee can cut it has a manager or not, he surely has the credentials as a coach

add sbragia to the mix and we must be able to get organised

mustn't we?

but we have now had 8 months of this, so i dunno

I don't. No-one should be allowed a clear run on goal from the halfway line!

I do blame him partly for the first. He was ball watching competely. He had very little awareness. All was needed was a step back a second earlier and he would have cleared the cross.

The second goal - he was far too high up the field. His positioning has always been questionnable

and how many times have we seen players with such an opportunity saved by jussi

whether he had a clear run isn't relevant

fact is, jussi usually saves em

the second goal, our world class striker weakly gives away the ball

if he doesn't, as he shouldn't, he's be looking for aball to the right wing

if hunt wasn't there, that'd be his fault too

anyway, at least its not lees fault anymore :drinks:

if i was being harsh, i'd point out diouf, davies and helguson wouldn't have lost the ball for our first either, as the foul on anelka was much less of one than the one on hunt that he ended up getting booked for

Agree in many parts. Everything in front of the back 4 is very weak and the moment in terms of defending so mistakes are inevitable. I am merely criticising Cid and Hunt for their positional play. You would rarely see the likes of Bruno or Bergsson get caught under the ball when a cross is coming in and they would rarely get turned inside out when a player is running at them.

This is happening a lot at the moment and I think it's down to basic positional play. We need a coach that can sort this out. Sammy Lee was a midfielder and FSA was a defender so could pass his advice on. I don't know who is behind the scenes in defensive coaching but they aren't doing too well at the moment.

Pompey have tightened up lots in the past two seasons with Tony Adams in their staff.

Good point bwfcy2k. It is said that managers mould sides into their own style of play.

Sammy Lee rates Phil Thompson as a coach. I wouldn't be suprised to see him added to the coaching staff at some point.

Wheres Bruno N Gotty these days? <_<

At Leicester, love. They let 2 in against a championship side btw.

That's crap, the first one he was left two on one at the back post, caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.

The second is a classic situation where Campo could have prevented that goal. Just someone anchoring there would make the pass harder to make. They played one pass bang right through the middle of us. Shocking. Our centre of midfield is non-existant.
