The league table does offer hope in that we are still within reach of 6 clubs with just 1 win, our goal difference is ok and somehow the worst team we have played this season have got to 10 points!

I'm still confident there are at least three clubs worse than ours!

With the way other teams have started as well this season. I can see "safety" being as low as 35 points.......................I'm not overly confident that we'll get that many though

Thing is we're now entering a phase where we really have to start picking up points. We're a quarter of the way through now, and come the last quarter your general destiny is sorted - you know its relegation run-in, euro-run etc. So we're a third of the way through our defining games.

And I have two worries - that the fixtures thus far have hardly been the toughest and [ii] that requests for time for SL may not be refering so much now to him sorting out our best way of playing but actually to him learning his trade. If it is the latter then it shows what a blunder we've made - how often do people with no experience of a job get put in the position of the most important person in a company with a multi-tens of millions pound turnover?

But there's no denying we're getting better - we'll get dicked at Arsenal but if we can then start to stuff the kind of teams we should be stuffing we'll be reet.

One win is all we've managed all season, we couldn't even beat f?cking Derby.

 

I lost faith in Lee after Brum, he could change all that by getting some results, but I just can't see us beating anyone at the moment...........we were lucky to hang onto a 1-0 win against those Eastern European tractor-sh?ggers in the week.

 

One thing pleased me - he dropped Speed and Nolan - but that's it.

I think we will have to be seriously bad to go down this year, the bottom 8 are very poor, 2 back to back wins will see us climb out of the relegation positions and I can see villa/west ham and boro giving us that opportunity.

In fact yesterday was very much an Allardyce-esque performance - we did well in spells - the midfield worked incredibly hard and were busy (Guthrie playing like Nolan did when he first came through anyone?), but going forward gave very little support to the man on the ball - particularly in the final third - it was bacl to the percentage game.

 

With one difference

 

We're now a fair bit weaker in central defence:

 

During our successful years, we've always had a "rock" who you felt you could rely upon at the back - Gudni, Bruno, Haim and to an extent Faye (even though I thought he was better in midfield). Yet now we have Meite and O'Brien (forget Cid) and I'd be happy to have either of them in the team with an aforementioned "rock" - as a second centre-half so as to speak, but together they never give me that feeling that they'll always get a last gasp tackle in or win every header etc etc..

he's not set the world alight yet, but if you're going to go back to being hard to beat - always a good idea imo - you need to have somebody capable of the unexpected up the pitch

If you want us to be hard to beat you would seriously drop one of very few players that can give our defence a rest by holding onto the ball? Diouf also works incredibly hard in every game.

 

I'm not doubting his quality but Wilhelmsson appears to be the kind of player to go missing in games - as he did for long spells on Thursday and yesterday - not the kind of player required when we need to roll the old sleeves up.

I'm also sure that he's not just a primadonna, but I'm not sure what he's done to warrant replacing Diouf and / or what Diouf has done to warrant being dropped.

 

The midfield looked ok yesterday compared to previous games and I don't think our main problems come from our front 3 either.

He could beat a bunch of nobodys on thursday but his final ball was dire.

when he came on against chelsea he gave the ball away too often. Hes too lightweight for the premier league and that showed sunday, not the answer we've seen loads of these sort in the last few years
