Not seen this anywhere else but it was reported on radio 5 live this morning that we would've received an additional ?1 million from Chelsea if Anelka had converted that penalty the other night.

 

I'm guessing that's why we've not heard anything about season ticket prices yet. Don't expect any reductions

Nicolas Anelka claimed to be a changed man when he completed his ?15 million signing from Bolton Wanderers in January, but the player formerly known as the Incredible Sulk returned with a vengeance yesterday. In an amazing outburst, the Chelsea striker blamed everyone but himself for missing the decisive penalty in Wednesday?s Champions League final shoot-out defeat by Manchester United, even making the admission that he had refused to take one of the first five penalties.

 

Anelka?s tame shot, which Edwin van der Sar saved, was the culmination of a miserable start to his time at Chelsea during which he has scored two goals and failed to alter a record of never having scored at Stamford Bridge in his career. The 29-year-old was introduced as a replacement for Joe Cole ten minutes into the first period of extra time at the Luzhniki Stadium, making little impact until his penalty sparked wild celebrations among United players and supporters.

 

Anelka revealed yesterday that he had been asked to take one of the first five penalties, but he refused on the grounds that he had been played out of position on the right of midfield and had been given insufficient time to warm up, leaving John Terry to become the fall guy.

 

Anelka did not become involved until Chelsea?s seventh penalty, allowing the less-experienced Salomon Kalou to take the first of the sudden-death spot-kicks, and his laid-back reaction provided the ultimate contrast to Terry?s tears. ?I was asked to take one of the first five kicks,? With so many strikers likely to depart, reinforcements will be needed and Robinho, the Real Madrid and Brazil forward, may be on the recruitment list. Wagner Ribeiro, his agent, said yesterday that he met Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, on Thursday to talk over a ?28 million move to Stamford Bridge, although Robinho was mentioned in Spanish newspapers yesterday as a possible pawn in the move to take Cristiano Ronaldo to Real from Manchester United.

Now I'm not sticking up for him here BUT we all know some of his interviews have been a little "twisted" to suit. The media love to hate him. He was a professional at our club which is what matters to me. The lad had a fantastic opportunity to go to Chelsea and fair play to him, but it's not panned out the way he wanted it to and I really don't see what he's done wrong to not get the games. I sometimes wonder if Chelsea buy good players just so other teams can't have them. Yes, he gets paid a large sum of money to bench warm every week but I'm sure it is frustrating when he sees other players getting games when he's not. And yes, I noticed on Wednesday he appeared to come straight off the bench without much of a warm up.

And penalties are psychological imho, and I'd say he was probably having a bit of a 'sulk'.
