im about to start converting my garage which currently has a concrete floor 130mm below the kitchen floor.

 

i was to use kingspan Thermafloor k3 sheets so a separate vapour control layer wouldnt be required, but the thickest i can find is 70mm.

 

anybody have any experience in such an area, if so, what do i do?

If I were you I would keep the garage just that, it will be a lot of expense for lvery ittle return and when it comes to sell, most buyers would prefer one to a games room.

I was going to suggest screed but not sure what the maximum recommended thickness is. Smiffs will be on in a bit no doubt, he'll tell you.

Just had a look, that does look like a good solution. I'd email the company and see if it's suitable to screed over. Some materials might deteriorate over time due to chemicals in the screed.

Assume you have Building Reg Approval?

A big roll of 1200 gauge DPM is about ?35, you could do your garage, everyone elses in Bolton, and still have enough to wrap up body parts.

 

To lift it 130mm then BCG is right with a 70mm layer of insulation and 60mm of screed. However, as I am sure you will be getting full building regs approval 70mm may not be enough to meet your energy calcs.

 

So, it is far more environmentally sustainable to smash the slab up with pneumatic breaker driven by a diesel compressor, dig out the formation with a minidigger (make sure the carbon monoxide that belches out of it doesnt get itno the house or you will have a big fuck off yedwarch), transport it in a 20 tonne tipper to landfill, then fill it back up with 150mm of reinforced concrete and 3 foot of insulation.

 

A cheap and easy option would be to construct a suspended timber floor; 6x2 joists at 450mm centres. Fill the voids between the joists with Kingspan, plonk some 8x2 floorboards on the joists and bobs your uncle. However, the timber will rot within about 10 years if you dont provide an airflow to it (it prevents build up of moisture).

 

So you will need a few air bricks knocking in and holes cutting or drilling into your joists but even then the Kingspan will limit the airflow. This is where new fangled energy rags meets old fasioned mother nature and have a big fuck off row.

 

To solve it you can loosly hang proprietry plastic netting from the top of the joists and then sit rockwool type insulation on top of the netting but still in between the joists, but sat a few inches off the floor to allow airflow. But you could be back to square one with your energy calcs.

 

Personally I'd fill the fucker with C35 concrete on visqueen with a few sheets of A292 mesh walked in and fuck the building regs.

 

That'll be ?1500 please.

i do want to do this more or less by myself, with the help of a few family tradesmen (mainly to keep costs down). so timber floor now seems like the easist way, with the suggested air bricks and the hovering rockwool. (energy calc, smenergy smalks, fukc um)
